    Electrical weirdness

If I hold the meter near the tractor, it goes nuts. Just out of curiosity I went and got a florescent light tube and it was glowing in my hand when I held it near the engine block. It takes high voltage to do that, so it's something in the ignition system. I cut all the zip ties and...

    Electrical weirdness

I've seen the meter hold a steady 14.48 volts while running before though.

    Electrical weirdness

I hooked up a water temp gauge. Now when it's running, I get crazy, rapidly changing readings on two different multi-meters across the battery. Engine off, 13.25 volts if it's just been running, 12.7-something after a few minutes. Normal, ... I removed the alternator wire to rule out...

    What if...

It was not overheating but I was seeing some wildly different temps moving around the block with my infrared gun. I added a water temp gauge today but I also flushed it. Flush kits are designed to hook to heater hoses. Obviously these tractors don't have heater hoses so I hadda make my...

finaly fixed the hoky 12v conversion

Methinks you were better off with the hokey coil. Ida just done a better job rigging up the wire to the distributor. I think they make kits for that.

So is maple syrup ok to use?

From the service manual. Page 22.

    What if...

... the water jackets in the block were full of calcified sediment that won't wash out in a flush? I noticed the drain valve on my radiator wasn't working when I was removing it for another purpose, .... didn't think much of it. Yesterday I opened the drain valve on the side of the...

do you need a resistor with a 12 volt front mount coil?

I just did a 12V conversion and EI conversion at the same time a couple weeks ago and also ran into trouble. These guys figured it out for me, ..I simply had too much resistance. But for yours to start up and only run for a bit then die, I'd have to guess either there's something wrong with...

Did I wire my ammeter backwards?

Good point about the electrical components having a known amp draw. With those draws known, anything in addition to that is what is being fed to the battery to recharge it. I will be running other 12 volt items though. Heated clothing, possibly trailer lights, etc

    Jump Start

That will only power the starter because juice won't be able to back-flow into the system unless the contacts in the solenoid are closed. I wouldn't even bother trying to start it with a completely dead battery anyway, because once it starts it's going to put one hell of a load on the...

    No start after EI conversion

Yeah I just took that 5 ohm resistor off the machine, wrote "5 ohms" on it and set it aside for whatever. I doubt I'll ever need it for anything. With the 12 volt (3 ohm) coil, wired straight to the ballast resistor, engine running, after a few minutes the ammeter would taper off to about...

Did I wire my ammeter backwards?

It's called math. Look at the gauge, if it's showing 5 amps, and you turn on the headlights and now it's showing 15 amps, then the headlights are drawing 10 amps.

Did I wire my ammeter backwards?

rue but when the voltage regulator automatically kicks up output to compensate for a load, turning on the lights will show on the gauge what additional power it's kicking out in order to power them. So in effect, it's showing the current draw of the lights. Thanks though. You've given me the...

How do you get the rear wheels off?

Correct, .. trying to get the center section of the rims off of the brake drums. I figured there would be a better solution than swinging a sledge hammer at it. I thought about getting one of those hydraulic ram/spreader things but that would put uneven pressure on it. Also thought...

Did I wire my ammeter backwards?

So if I put the loads on the same side as the alternator, the ammeter will only show what it's feeding the battery? That's what I assumed an ammeter is supposed to do, not read total amp draw output (or load on) the alternator. I'm kinda thinking I might just leave it the way it is. It's...
