    Resistor

So is the EI still hooked up or not? Re the coil..........what JMOR said, and the resistor is based upon coil resistance, not the EI. See tip # 30. Re the fuse, unless it's for the lights, it's not needed. https://forums.yesterdaystractors.com/pages/artint268/

    Is it the Coil?

These tractors are amazingly simple machines; they are over 70 years old and were designed to be maintained by the operator. Some basic troubleshooting skills and a few common tools will get them running. Randomly replacing parts doesn’t get you much. But your friends will often get in the...

Which battery for 12 volt conversion?

    The original 6V battery is Group Size 1 - 9-1/8 (L) x 7-1/8 (W) x 9-3/8 (H). 12V Group 25 & Group 35 batteries are just slightly smaller at 9-1/16 x 6-7/8 x 8-7/8. https://forums.yesterdaystractors.com/pages/artint268/

    Starting Issue

You can get the newer style bendix or you can do a tune up on the tractor. It works like this......the bendix engages the ring gear on the flywheel & turns the engine over. When the engine speed exceeds the design speed of the bendix (because the engine is running) it disengages. (and I can...

    1947 Ford 8N brakes

Probably, but you will know for sure once you get the drums off. Likely a broken spring. https://forums.yesterdaystractors.com/pages/artint268/

Duh! What am i doing wrong, starter solenoid?

Are you sure you have a solenoid and not a starter switch? https://forums.yesterdaystractors.com/pages/artint268/

    Burnt out points?

The first thing you need to check is for battery voltage at the coil. Yes, you need a meter for that, not a light. With the key on, you should see battery voltage ( 6.35 v, 12.65v) with the points open and about half that with the points closed. If you do not see either, the problem is between...

    Burnt out points?

Yea a violation of tip # 38! Your condenser is fine. Do what JMOR said to check the coil. Replace the points ( see tips 66, 67 & 68) then set the timing. https://forums.yesterdaystractors.com/pages/artint268/

    1952 8N hydraulics

Ford changed the 1939 spec of 80/90w oil to UTF years ago. Any UTF that meets the Ford spec M2C134D will work fine in your N tractor. Just read the label on the container. I use the UTF from TSC year around here in VA. You will find the UTF to work a lot better below 32* F than 80/90...

    1952 8N hydraulics

When the N lift is jerky coming up it means that one or more of the four pump cylinders is not pumping. It can be caused by broken springs in the pump chambers or a broken Scotch yoke in the pump that the pistons are attached to. Either one means the pump will need to be removed from the tractor...

    8n ford tractor running bad

The number one cause of a weak spark is a weak battery. A 12v battery should read 12.65 volts. Does it? Next, what did you set the point gap at? Front or side distributor? https://www.yesterdaystractors.com/articles/artint268.htm

    Spark plug wire tube

If you don't get suppression plug wires as recommended by Pertronix, yes, you're screwed.

    Spark plug wire tube

With EI, you should never use copper wires.

    Spark plug wire tube

If those modern silicon wires are not copper core, you will have spark problems. See tips 7 & 27. https://www.yesterdaystractors.com/articles/artint268.htm
