    801 stutters, stalls going uphill

Thanking you for the response and good advice. I'm away from the tractor for the holidays but I'll give your thorough suggestion a try ASAP and will report back.

    801 stutters, stalls going uphill

1958 Ford 801...usually works great, but occasionally stutters and stalls going uphill. It starts gasping, as if it was going to run out of gas. Can often keep it going by taking all load off motor and reducing idle speed, letting it come back to power. Other times it kills immediately, and...

Ford 841 Carb: Sticking Float, or ???

Whaaaaat? I never said I was determined that it was the needle. In fact I rather doubt it is, based on the advice I've gotten. I said all the advice was good advice, although I'd acted on some it previously. These forums are great. I've greatly benefited from them. I came looking for...

Ford 841 Carb: Sticking Float, or ???

Just checked the Walker catalog...for the TSX-662 they recommend 778-508 kit. It's got the needle seat. Unless you correct me on the kit info, I'll get one and see if it fixes things...

Ford 841 Carb: Sticking Float, or ???

Also: For sure. I've rebuilt the carb twice but as I recall the basic rebuild kit only provides a needle, not a seat. Any recommendations on a source for a decent rebuild-kit (or individual parts) that would include a seat?

Ford 841 Carb: Sticking Float, or ???

Good stuff, thank for the responses. Hadn't considered that. I rebuilt the engine a couple of years ago and come to think of it I haven't gone back and checked torques after the first month. Will inspect. Have tried that, never definitive. Gas always flows strong. Makes me wonder if I'm...

Ford 841 Carb: Sticking Float, or ???

It always starts right up with nothing wrong, but dies either within moments, or keeps running until I increase the RPMs. No choke necessary when warm. I keep it real clean. Yes, that's what baffles me. I can hear it move, doesn't stick or hang or rub...but when it's back on the tractor it...

Ford 841 Carb: Sticking Float, or ???

Hi - Ford 841 gas with TSX 662 carb. Runs great BUT will occasionally starve on gas. When it does, it idles low ok, but increase RPMs and she dies. It's often like this at cold startup, but can then happen after a couple of hours running. Best way to get it running is pound upside...

    Start drive gear shattered twice...why?

I couldn't wait for the warranty replacement to arrive (regular mail from Florida to California) so I found one in-state from a non-internet tractor place, and they shipped it to me in a day. It's a CNH 87421556 (Prestolite?). Interesting, it's not made in India, like the two failed ones...

    Start drive gear shattered twice...why?

Update: The folks from this site contacted the source for this part and they'll be sending out a new one under warranty. No comment on whether there are known problems with these (apparently the failed unit was from Atlantic). So we'll see if it holds up. I appreciate the good customer service.

    Start drive gear shattered twice...why?

That's true, I said, "A while back I burned out my 6v starter on my 12v system, so I replaced it with a rebuilt 12v starter from NAPA." That happened a couple of years ago, and then only after it ran fine for about 5 years on 12 volts. So no problem there. I only mentioned that to...

    Start drive gear shattered twice...why?

I think you misread my post. I said I replaced a 6v starter with a 12v rebuilt starter from NAPA, not India. I wasn't running 12v through a 6v starter. The starter DRIVE (from TISCO) was marked as "Made In India". But, do you guys think the problem is most likely a couple of faulty starter...

    Start drive gear shattered twice...why?

Hi - The starter drive on my 841 has blown up on me twice now (see attached pix). Here is some background info. I'd like to know if anybody has any clues as to why this is happening. I've got to buy new parts and don't want this to occur again (this time was in the middle of spreading 8 tons...

YT Gasket Set includes two rear main seals?

I'd love to use Hobo's Victor silicone kit but have no idea where to get it. Not at NAPA, can't find online. Need a clue. I've ordered the Felpro kit to use for the main seal. I think I'll use the green wedges with RTV instead of oil on the sides, and Indian Head Gasket Sealer all around the...

YT Gasket Set includes two rear main seals?

That's a good article. Thanks. The side wedge seals that I have came with the overhaul gasket kit. They are the tapered green expanding wedges. When dry, mine drop right into the wedged slots with plenty of room to spare. Many posts on this forum indicate that if they don't properly expand...
