Valve gap questions for B&S 5 HP side valve engine ....

Here's one (literally ONE) .... I'm guessint this is what you are referring to. I'm not bothering with it, for an hours use once each spring, it'll have to survive on its own. Nice chatting with you .... thank goodness for cut and paste .... check out this we link ....... a guy might die before...

Valve gap questions for B&S 5 HP side valve engine ....

This old girl has the easy start feature. I finally got it to start OK, I think it was losing prime but now works OK. An occasional backfire when starting and you gotta be careful holding that rubber rope grip. It cost me $20 so I'm not into it for big money yet ... :) I've read that the wide...

Valve gap questions for B&S 5 HP side valve engine ....

I would imagine you are correct with that. Pretty primitive way of setting valve gaps either way .... and prone to a lot of very careful back and forth grinding and measuring. I suspect most people with those old engines just leave it as is and soldier on. They've prtobably never been checked...

Valve gap questions for B&S 5 HP side valve engine ....

I've never been on the garden tractor forum here before I don't think so here goes. I picked up an older 5 HP tiller with a B&S side valve engine. The valve gaps are about twice as large as what the recommended setting is .... I have about 0.020 for the exhaust and 0,010 for the intake. I...

    Satoh Beaver

Our tractor club owns one and it's been a great little tractor for years and years. It has a three point hitch and we used to run a mower with it on the 3 point. This one is a Bison model .... it has a 1000cc Mazda Australian small pickup truck engine in it. Years ago you could still buy...

"Split Single Cylinder" engine design ....

There is an off-road 4x4 "pickup" style vehicle currently on the Hemmings Auction Site for sale, the Austrian manufacturer Puch was one of the names on the nameplate. I remember that outfit selling motorcycles here in North American many years ago through Sears, a 250cc "twin" 2-stroke. But...

Nearly mowed (not a pun) a motorcyclist this afternoon

As expected, the verdict is in and most everyone else other than the farm equipment operator is an idiot. All of this on a road which is used 99.99 % of the time by cars and trucks.

Compression on old 5HP B&S small engine ....

Thanks Tim, hard to find that info, B&S just rates the compression ratio. I think some of those had a compression release for starting. This one I have is from an old garden tiller and was transplanted on by someone in the past. It had no spark with the original ignition system, I ordered a...

Compression on old 5HP B&S small engine ....

This is an older version of the 5hp L-head engines that B&S made millions of, it has the old style ignition with points and a condensor. Any idea what the compression should be? This one has about 80-85 pounds when tested, how does that sound to you?

Hough Payloader .... interesting tractor ....

I see one of these for sale up here on Facebook Marketplace .... interesting unit. The seller says the Hercules gas engine on this isn't stuck, obviously not running though. He's asking only $1200 CDN which is probably a good buy for the right guy that could handle the project.

Substitute for Corn Head grease ????

I forgot to mention that when I prepare the rows themselves for planting in the spring, I just prepare the seed row itself and work it up, not the walking area beside. I just break the spaded lumps down a bit where we walk. I probably imagine the benefits of all this, not sure.

Substitute for Corn Head grease ????

I guess what I'm saying is that when spring time comes (after spading the garden over in the fall), just preparing the soil by hand with a garden fork and planting seems to end up being less compacted come fall time if it were tilled in the spring. I'm referring to the walk areas between rows...

Substitute for Corn Head grease ????

I thought of that but once I get through this little tiller project (if I do), it'll be used about 20 minutes every spring and if I don't see lube leaking out quite a bit, the level probably isn't going to change very much. Good idea though if it were a machine or a gearbox or whatever in...
