It uses very little as the flame is small,after the initial poof or light continue to hold for a few more seconds then crank,you want to give it some time to heat the air in the intake -

Also i have found out AFTER engine fires if you hold at the thermo start position making it stay light/fire it aids in helping the engine run smoother/better wile cold but only a few additional second, as any longer it's not needed. it's pretty cool actually hold it @ thermo engine runs... -

10 sec. will not even fire my glow let alone light then heat the intake some. i do a half min. minimum! -

Usually a comp test is done just with cranking speed,also it's done at operating temp. -

Fuel-fired heaters like these 4-5000 units use need longer time as stated above 30-90sec. to properly heat,ignite then warm. -

With a good fully charged 4DLT battery,2/0 cables,thermo start working she should light up down to 30-25deg. on her own,mine was nonoperational when i brought her home ran a new fuel line and power wire works like a charm now,mine you turn to the right there's a hard spot in the selector then... -

well if your putting out 13.7 thats fine the light should not be coming on i believe thats what mine puts out too and i have no light,how low of idle do you have? mines around 7-750rpm,at higher idles i got over 14v what does your do?
