    '49 8N - Trouble getting changing gears

JMOR, Thanks for your help on this. After some struggle, i was able to tighten the eye bolt by three turns which gave me some control over the clutch again. I was able to make the PTO shaft stop turning by depressing the clutch. Of course, i took the tractor back out to the field. I think it...

    '49 8N - Trouble getting changing gears

Hi JMOR, With PTO in gear, transmission in neutral, clutch depressed, the PTO shaft keeps turning full speed. Is there any way to jar the clutch loose without cracking it open? Thanks, Dan

    '49 8N - Trouble getting changing gears

I was plowing irrigation corrugates in the pasture this morning with my 8N. Everytime I crossed the field, I had to reverse and line up for the next pass. I only mention this because there was lots of gear shifting - particular between 2nd gear and Reverse going on. About half an hour into the...

6 Volt Generator How To Test

I installed a new post-style ammeter on my early 8N recently. When i first hooked it up, i had the polarity reversed on the ammeter so it was showing negative amps (i think it was -20amps). No big deal, I thought. I can just reverse the wires. When i hooked it up correctly a few days later after...

Not enough clearance to get radiator cap on

I should have mentioned that the grill is not attached in that top picture. When it is attached at the bottom, it can't close because of the hood nose hanging down. Dan

Not enough clearance to get radiator cap on

They claimed the damage was in the cast iron portion at the top and bottom where it couldn't be fixed. The holes in my old shroud lined up perfectly with the ones in the new radiator. ...which may mean this has nothing to do with the radiator and i made a mistake when putting the sheet metal...

Not enough clearance to get radiator cap on

This isn't the only issue i'm having with this hood. Here are a couple of pics: I think the bottom front of the hood is supposed to more or less parallel the shape of the grill. When i bought the tractor, the grill was wedgied up and behind the lip of the hood. There's a small break where...

Not enough clearance to get radiator cap on

I installed the pads that came with the kit and probably did crank the bolts down pretty snug. I doubt that will account for how much i'm coming up short. I need to go over the way the hood and side supports are put together and where they mount to the frame. I don't think there's a lot of...

Not enough clearance to get radiator cap on

Good point. I hadn't considered that.

Not enough clearance to get radiator cap on

This radiator came with the radiator kit for 8Ns with front-mount distributors from Yesterday's Tractors. The neck is centered in the hole, but it is just a half inch or so too short. That's why i'm thinking maybe i can put some kind of bumper under the rad to lift it up. I just need to find...

Not enough clearance to get radiator cap on

When i put the hood back on my 8N recently, i discovered there isn't enough clearance to get the radiator cap on. The radiator was replaced with a Made in China unit and the radiator shop kept my old leaky one. So, i can't compare measurements between the old and new radiator. I'm considering...

Some things i noticed after getting the 8N running again

Excellent point. No magnet for me. I found the screen for my oil drain plug last night. It was sitting roughly where it is supposed to be but not connected to the plug. A little bit mangled though I'm not sure if that was from rough handling during cleaning or if it happened when replacing...

Wiring harness AND spark plug wires?

When I did this recently, I put in the spark plug wires one at a time first. I didn't think the connectors on the end would survive being pulled through as a bundle. When I got all of those in place, I used a fish tape (stiff piece of still wire with a bend on one end would work) to pull through...

Some things i noticed after getting the 8N running again

Dell, When I took my oil drain cap off, no screen came with it. In the parts catalogs, I see the 3" screen you are talking about. I've let the tractor drain overnight. This afternoon when I'm home, i'll put my finger in the hole to see if the screen is stuck in there. If the screen is...

Some things i noticed after getting the 8N running again

FD, when I got the tractor, there was no sediment bowl - just a 90degree fitting coming out of the bottom of the gas tank. Out of that was a short stretch of steel tubing which then changed off to black "rubber" fuel line with a in-line fuel filter. Out of that it went to a cheap fuel shut-off...
