John Deere A leaking Hydraulic Fluid into transmission
No, I took the hydraulic pump off but did not split it open. It was located at the front of the tractor behind the radiator fan. I read that the PTO seal could be the reason the hydraulic oil is mixing with the transmission fluid. We did run an oversized tiller on the PTO over some rocky...- Dave3

I have a 1956 John Deere 430W tractor that is having the same problem. Anyone know if the fix would be the same? I pulled the hydraulic pump and it looks good. I was going to pull the Touch-O-Matic housing next. I was using an oversized tiller for the PTO and I think this might have caused the...- Dave3

Looking for something I can spray into the control valve and unloader valve housing that will remove any junk/sludge. I agree with you, I don't want to take it apart! -

What is a good solution to use to clean the sludge out of the top cover and hydraulic fluid reservoir? Would CRC brake cleaner work or kerosene? Need something to dissolve the sludge but not the O-rings. -

I got the hydraulic cylinder housing separated from the top cover! Lots of cleaning to do! This is the best video I found on how to clean and replace O-rings in the housing. The cylinder only had the rubber gasket. Many of the O-rings looked distorted. The control valve would not move. -

Thank you Destroked450! I will do what you said with both valves. Anything else I should check while it is off? Should the rings on the hydraulic piston be changed? I think I will use Ultra Black RTV. I'm sure there is a reason the last person used silicon on the lid. The surface might not be... -

Took the top cover off today. Very heavy! I thought it only weighed around 120 lbs. I had to get the engine hoist to lift it off. Glad I knew it was 15 bolts. That last bolt does hide. First problem was the amount of black sludge. Very thick and sticky. Also, the last guy who took off the top... -

Yes, I drained it three times wrestling with the hydraulic pump install. It is rare my repairs are successful with one try. LOL I refilled until it started coming out of the check plug hole on the side of the tractor. I have a repair manual but it is not always clear or easy to understand. I... -

Was able to mow for 3 hours and then the lift went all the way up and would not come down. I parked the tractor under the pole barn, and I heard a popping sounds about 30 minutes later. The lift was slowly going down. I think it is time to remove the top cover and see what needs to be replaced.
