    69 Ford 4000 Diesel Won't Start

Agreed. I've checked all of the connections (visibly and with a DVM) and made sure that they're clean and tight.

    69 Ford 4000 Diesel Won't Start

I cleaned the battery terminals when I replaced the battery. There was some oxidation, but no corrosion. Battery reads 12.3 VDC with the negative terminal disconnected Battery reads 12.3 VDC with the negative terminal connected Voltage reads 12.3 VDC through the wire (disconnected) to the...

    69 Ford 4000 Diesel Won't Start

Continuity was checked in hops. First, battery to switch. Then I checked the switch in all positions for open or closed between terminal 1 (battery) and all other terminals. I replaced the wiring harness and ignition switch a few years ago. The wire from the switch to the the starter...

    69 Ford 4000 Diesel Won't Start

Hey all. I went to start her up a couple weeks ago after sitting all winter and nothing happened. I figured dead battery and charged it. Still nothing, so I load tested the battery and then replaced it. Still will not start - not even a click. I traced the wiring through with a DVM and I...

    Old MH Square Baler ID

I tried rotating the flywheel in both directions. It doesn't turn freely - only as far as gear lash will allow. How much force should it take to turn the flywheel? What could cause it not to turn?

    Old MH Square Baler ID

Hey all. I have an old Massey Harris baler which was left for dead on this property we just bought. It's a MH No. ? Of course the decal is worn away and I can't find a plate with year / model / SN, etc. Anyone recognize this beast? I'd like to use it if it can be made functional...

    Ford 4000 Questions

The tractor is a '69 Ford 4000. It's a 3 cyl diesel, 8 speed manual with a loader. It's also been retrofitted to a class I 3-point hitch. I've changed the oil & filter, flushed the radiator and I want to change the transmission oil and the rear axle fluid. What oil do I use for...

    Wood Chipper Question

I'm in the market for a PTO driven Class 1 mountable wood chipper. It'll hang on a Ford 4000. I have a lot of dead fall to clear up and am having some land cleared, so I'll have plenty of green limbs, too. Any thoughts out there regarding good brands?

    '69 4000 Tachometer

Thanks Willy. That's pretty much the same diagram that I found. Good to know that the "sense" is no longer necessary to connect.

So, the alternator has 3 terminals: Battery, Field and Sense. I only have wires for battery and field in the new harness. What do I do with sense? I've read that some people are wiring that terminal to the hot terminal on their fuel pump or starter motor.

I don't know that it's that exact cable, but it looks the same. I assume that this cable also drives the hour meter?

    '69 4000 Tachometer

Posted too quickly. Thanks Sunbeam. Great suggestion - I hadn't considered that alternators with tach drives were available. Still a lot for me to learn. What about this? http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/Ford-4000_12-Volt-Conversion-Kit_6X10300ALTH.html I'm assuming that the "tach drive"...

    '69 4000 Tachometer

Interesting. I looked up the alternator here: http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/Massey-Ferguson-165_Alternator_ADR0327.html The tach cable I have has a threaded end which screws onto the generator.

    '69 4000 Tachometer

I found out why my tach doesn't work. The cable has been disconnected and tucked up under the cowling behind the regulator. I guess this was done because the tractor has an alternator. Two questions: I'm rewiring the tractor with a new wiring harness. Currently, there are no wires connected...
