    340 distributor problems

Mine is #3635 SVY, a 1960 Utility. T/A, Independent PTO, Fast Hitch, 2-valve hydraulics, Exhaust valve rotators, Rear wheel weights, converted to 12V, 12 GPM hydraulic pump, power steering.

    340 distributor problems

Well I've found that they had two types. One type had the hydraulic pump under the distributor, with a zigzag-looking line back to the transmission. The other, like mine, has the pump mounted in the rear, under the fuel tank and steering assy. I assume this was an option for some reason (?)...

    340 distributor problems

Mine should only have crank, cam, and gov in the geartrain. My governor is pretty nasty looking too, much like the innards of the distributor. I think I should invest the time in teardown/clean/reinstall just for good measure. I'm fairly sure that this tractor has done a whole LOT of sitting...

    340 distributor problems

Well, I finally got the dang distributor out, after being put to the way-back burner for months on end. It all looks good, except for the grease on everything is gross and full of rust. So that will be remedied. I was concerned from there, since it showed no damage, and I had a helper bump...

    340 distributor problems

OK. So can I replace that drive gear? Is it plastic (sacrificial), or do I have to worry about its mating gear being torn up and metal shavings in the oil? I've not had a distributor out before, and I'm not sure what I'm looking to find. I'm hoping against hope that the distributor is...

    340 distributor problems

OK, so I parked my 340 Utility for the night, and it wouldn't start the next morning. I looked over the usual suspects, and didn't have any fire at the plugs. OK, I thought, some of the wiring shot craps and I'll have an electrical issue to fix. So I chased an electrical issue that isn't...

340 Utility Fast Hitch surges up/down

Fast hitch update: Well, I found that the rod that runs over the top of the transmission to the Tel-a-Depth valve doesn't move as well as it should. Cleaning, Lubricating, etc helped. Now if it starts "hunting" I can wiggle the rod to the valve, and it quits. Also, it seems like...

Corn Pickers, what are you guys doing with cob corn

City people are buying them by the sackful, to feed to the dang squirrels in their yards. Places like nurseries and farm/feed stores sell ear corn to feed the squirrels.

340 Utility Fast Hitch surges up/down

I really looked at it like a safety issue; somebody might be within reach of an implement when the hitch starts "hunting around" and I'll guarantee who's gonna win that fight- the implement 100% of the time. My Tel-a-depth handle is stuck, and I've got to get it freed up to figure out how much...

340 Utility Fast Hitch surges up/down

Thanks, my friend. I'm just concerned that someone might get hurt if it's hunting around for a happy spot when we're working with it. I'll look over all the linkage and report back with what I find. Have a great Memorial Day weekend!

340 Utility Fast Hitch surges up/down

Well, it does it even when it's empty. Nothing in the fast hitch arms at all. Under load, once you find the 'sweet spot', it stays put where you leave it. The hard part is finding the sweet spot that makes it stop raising or lowering.

340 Utility Fast Hitch surges up/down

OK. I'm confused why the Fast Hitch lift/lower controls don't seem to be able to find a happy spot where the arms will stay put. I'll lift them to the height I need, re-center the control handle, and the arms will surge up or down, stay put there for a moment, and surge again. That could be a...

    Farmall 340

I have a 1960 International 340 Utility, and I was told the same thing- if I'd ever be interested in putting a loader on it, I should find one that connects to the front end and the bell housing- so as to add a "frame member" down the sides of the engine to overcome the weak nature of the...

International 340 Utility Spin-On oil filter conversion

BarnyardEngineering, I should have led off with the fact that I had just bought this tractor, and it was just sitting around for quite a while. This was my first oil + filter change / hytran + filter change. So this can probably be blamed on "Operator Headspace"... I'll bet that there's a...
