The Farm. Haying and Cattle Thread

lol. I looked today and the ECM has us for 5 inches Sat-Tues. GFS has the perfect amount of about quarter inch. Even if we don't get rain the sun will bleach it out. Dew helps. Just takes longer. It is a tough crop for this area. Trying to predict best time to mow so not to mature with trying to...

The Farm. Haying and Cattle Thread

Thought I would start a thread about what we do here. Will be mostly pictures from past and present. Been selling hay off from 200 acres acres for over 10 years now at this scale. Have a herd of Dexters, Jerseys, and Dexter/Jersey crosses for beef sales. current herd is 40+. Also help my cousin...

Questions: wrapping DRY hay (round bales, single cutting, grass w some legumes)

Question then. I'm assuming you are leaving them outside before wrapping them so they are still exposed the weather? After the sweat out period what is your protocol for wrapping after they get rained on. At least my area the odds of weeks of dry weather does not exist.

Questions: wrapping DRY hay (round bales, single cutting, grass w some legumes)

That didn't make a difference on the hay I bought. Wrapped with both black and white.

Questions: wrapping DRY hay (round bales, single cutting, grass w some legumes)

I’ve never seen good luck with wrapping dry. If feeding it yourself and dont mind slime/mold/spoilage try several methods and let us know what works. I personally would wrap them as you would baleage. For 4x4 I use 21 revolutions with 30” wrap wrapping individually. This year I had to buy hay...

For Those who Sell Hay - Prices in 2026?

Had a guy that wanted a grass Alfalfa mix. At the time had a field I acquired that had some Alfalfa in it and showed it to him then proceeds to tell me he doesn't know what Alfalfa looks like????????? Even my regular buyers that don't buy enough during the summer will call during winter and ask...

For Those who Sell Hay - Prices in 2026?

I had a customer try to replace bales because they were "dusty". Had them bring the bale in question. Sure enough it was dusty. Then we opened it. You hit the center and the only dust was a couple inchers around the surface. Told them I can't replace them. This is from fog/atmospheric...

    2026 hay season begins

If we are lucky our haying season will start in a month. Customers are out here to. I'm just starting to let some go in small increments. Several hard long winters and they still haven't learned to buy more in season because it may be hard to find after the fact. Not to mention drought here that...

For Those who Sell Hay - Prices in 2026?

To many people here sell hay just for something to do. We try to set ourselves apart with better quality but does not equate to better prices because everyone is looking for a deal. We are $3/bale for 1st cutting field pickup and $4 for 2nd cutting. Priced higher for prebuy and stored. And any...

JD 2155 seat cushions and trans dipstick location

You know what's odd in your picture is the plug should be painted if factory. And I would be curious if a plastic plug would have been used in an area that could allow water to enter the hydraulic system. As TxJim mentioned the location is different pending serial number. Start there. What is...

    Skid steer

Once I drove a skidsteer with pilot controls. Had to drive with my hand behind my back to keep in control. Maybe over a long time I could wrap my brain around that style. H pattern on my skidsteer and any I've run recently. Have foot control option but they rusted away a long time ago.
