    Ah, thank you. I thought the voltage regulator was polarity dependent. It looks like the amp meter on the tractor is wired for (+) ground, but it works: with (-) to ground, it shows charging when it is discharging. I will get a new voltage regulator.

    I saw that the amp meter showed the battery was charging when I turned on the field windings for generator and starter, without the engine running. :-) That told me that, by golly, it really is (+) ground. Ugh. Now I need a new VR.

    I will swap battery cables and see what happens. Thank you. I do not know why the starter worked correctly when it is wired (-) ground: I think the engine would start "backwards."

    Thank you for mentioning this. The battery is connected (-) to ground, which is how I received it. I am thinking the owner of the ranch saw that the battery cable with red on one end assumes it was for the (+) lug on the battery, and put in a new battery that way.

    It took about 18 hours to destroy a new battery. Apparently the tractor is (+) ground. Oops!

    Thank you 100+ times. I looked at the repair parts here on yesterdaystractors and I see that the voltage regulator is (+) ground. Yet the red battery cable goes to the starter, which confused me.

    This is beyond awesome: thank you. I will print your reply to my printer. At the moment, I think the VR is worn out. It is possible that there is a short in the electrical system caused by the lights being worn out.

    Thank you again. I am contemplating that (+) ground. The battery (-) is currently going to ground, which may indeed be why the poor thing is suffering. Good gods. The red battery cable is going to the starter, which suggests to me a (-) ground.

    Thank you. I did not know there are DC generators: my ignorance is vast as the ocean. My boat had a dynamo that produced DC. I opened the voltage regulator and say the relays. I will buy a new one. Thank you.

    I used a garbage multimeter from China that has no shielding at all from ambient EM radiation. I would love to have a Fluke, but I am a hand on a cattle ranch in Northern New Mexico: buying food comes first.
