Why is Battery Boiling out Electrolyte?

JMOR and Royce, thanks for explaining the cutout ... I didn't completely understand how it worked. My cutout is doing what it should and is not the problem. I'll re-check the wiring but don't know what kind of wiring problem would do this, especially now that I understand the cutout. The 'ol...

Why is Battery Boiling out Electrolyte?

Tim, good point about the battery fill level. I did add some water to it while doing the engine repair to bring the level up to where it belongs. I'll have to look again for the fill line but if memory serves I added enough water to bring the level up to the bottom of the tubes that drop down...

Why is Battery Boiling out Electrolyte?

Trying to figure out why my battery is boiling out electrolyte. :? It's a 2N with a one-wire 6-volt generator. The wiring is clean ... I put a new wiring harness on it shortly after I got it (about 30 yrs ago) so there's no funky wiring. I'm thinkin' the most common causes for this is the...

Crankshaft is now .060 / .030, whatever that means.

Thanks, guys. I know .060 is the max on a journal. Was just wondering whether it's customary to call out mains or rods first in a description, kind of like the way GPS coordinates always specify latitude first then longitude. That's a decent price for a vernier (8.97 & free shipping) if...

Crankshaft is now .060 / .030, whatever that means.

Going through paperwork from 1999 on an engine rebuild. The machine shop noted "crankshaft is now .060 / .030. Either the rod journals are .060 undersized and the mains .030, or vice versa. How can 'ya tell which is which without micing the crank? Is there a standard for this?

ROD BOLT HITTING OIL PICKKUP TUBE

Yep, I cleaned up the threads nice and pretty. There will be no trouble for the next guy. :) Got it all back together and it runs great. Hooked up the finish mower just in time for it to start raining.

ROD BOLT HITTING OIL PICKKUP TUBE

Hobo, I did just that. Probably something a purist wouldn't do but given the situation it seems like the best fix. I see that as a guideline and not an absolute rule. Bolt strength isn't compromised and there's plenty of threads left. Here's what we have now, bolt-to-tube clearance is right...

ROD BOLT HITTING OIL PICKKUP TUBE

Mission accomplished, I think. I cut a piece of 1/2" black iron pipe nipple in half longways and put half against the bottom of the tube to protect it from the vice grip jaw. Did the same thing on the top except used a small piece (1" x 2") flat iron stock. Adjusted the vice grips 1/2 turn at a...

ROD BOLT HITTING OIL PICKKUP TUBE

Just now checked and the rod bolt pushes the bell down about 1/32", definitely less than 1/16". The tube has a small burr where the bolt was hitting it but nothing serious, I'll knock that down with a file. Also it looks like the tube IS brazed to the oil pump cover plate. :) It is gold...

ROD BOLT HITTING OIL PICKKUP TUBE

Hobo, yeah, if we're smart we learn from our mistakes. I'll not repeat that one! I'm not sure how the tube is joined to the oil pump cover plate. The joint material looked gold colored so if I'm lucky it's brazed. I'll check that closer to be sure. If it's lead I'll upgrade it to silver solder...

ROD BOLT HITTING OIL PICKKUP TUBE

OK, guess I'll leave the angle grinder in its case. :) Probably a good thing, that just didn't feel right. TOH and Den suggest bending the tube for clearance. My experience with bending tubing is limited to soft copper and steel brake lines. I wouldn't be insulted if someone would kindly...

ROD BOLT HITTING OIL PICKKUP TUBE

The old pickup tube came from together and was destroyed by the spinning crank. I put in a new tube, buttoned it all up and when I started the engine it made a noise that sounded like a rod bearing knocking. Took me a minute to remember reading here about two different styles of pickup...

    Voltage drop test

Never thought of using a VOM that way to test electrical connections but it makes perfect sense. Voltage is simply a difference in electrical potential and there will be a difference between two sides of a bad connection. Will definitely add this to my bag of tricks. Thanks for the tip.

Can a worn out front axle pin & bushing bend radius rods

I've seen a lot of pictures here of bent radius rods on N-series tractors and if there's a comment about the cause, it's usually something like "must have hit something really hard". I don't know that I've seen a comment that says for sure the bend was caused by collision ... but then I haven't...

Is this Scrap Iron or Parts ?

:) Well yeah, there is that! I don't know how may times I've done that ... but it's a lot. I'm thinking now I'll keep it all including radius rod, at least for a while (while = years probably). I still have some rafter space open so might as well. Don't have a cutting torch so it's...
