Can''t get head off 188 diesel

Well yeah, that IS what he's been doing for years  But it's a heck of a way to run an engine. While we were into it that far, a head gasket wasn't much more work - or so we thought. Anyway he will continue taking a morning leak :D

Can''t get head off 188 diesel

No bolt in that behind-the-waterpump hole, so someone's been in there before... We tried cranking the engine and it didn't budge. Put the rocker gear back on, same thing. I even leaned on a pry bar WHILE he cranked. That SOB is on there to stay. The owner is not brave enough to try a...

Can''t get head off 188 diesel

Thanks, I'm considering doing just that! Should I put the rocker gear back on or will the air in the cylinders (since all valves are closed) suffice? There are only two studs, the ones in the center with the huge hex nuts for the valve cover mounting. The front stud came out with the nut and...

Can''t get head off 188 diesel

The WP is out per the manual, but I don't think he removed anything from that hole. Still I'd expect a [i:dbd346d91d]little[/i:dbd346d91d] movement in the rear of the head where we were levering... will doublecheck, thanks :)

Can''t get head off 188 diesel

Pulling the head on G188D. or trying to. It will NOT come off. Yes, all the bolts are out including the ones through the front cover  but it's stuck to the block incredibly tight after 48 years. I've put a long bar from the rear of the head, fulcrum at the front loader rail, and my...

188D won''t run any more - what happened??

You (and Clint) nailed it!! Thanks! :) We disconnected the coupling from the hydraulic pump - and the engine fired up on one turn like it always has! He also had been wondering why the tractor would "twitch" upon cranking (bucket was sitting on the ground, dug into the dirt). Said "it never did...

Thank you for the confirmation... so we'll look at that too!

188D won''t run any more - what happened??

We did... even made sure there was fuel in the tank 8) In medical training there's an old expression. "When you hear hoofbeats, think of horses first, not zebras" :D I think we're in zebra territory now...

188D won''t run any more - what happened??

There is diesel coming from the lines to the injectors at the head, when loosening the line nuts and cranking. So fuel has to get to the pump. Also a good flow at the inlet to the pump, and the pump was full when removing the window to check the timing marks... I hadn't thought of looking at the...

188D won''t run any more - what happened??

I have a friend with a 1972 model 580 backhoe who was doing some digging for me, and he shut it off for less than 3 minutes. The G188 diesel has never run or started again and we can't figure out why! :( It will crank and just spit a little smoke out the exhaust while cranking but it would...

    Rockshaft slowly sinking (70D)

I'm looking at the parts catalog page right now (PC0445, Group 75-6) and don't see how it would be possible to remove and reinsert the piston in the cylinder without taking the rockshaft housing off the tractor, then removing the cylinder from the housing. Could it be reached through the hole...

    Rockshaft slowly sinking (70D)

OK, I figured as much... so once I get in there, how do I repair the cylinder? I doubt that there are any new parts available, so will I have to have the bore sleeved?

    Rockshaft slowly sinking (70D)

My 70D has always had a (very) slow sink on the 3-pt hitch with 6' bush hog attached. But in the last few years it has begun sinking faster, although it has no problem picking the entire hog up in the air. But now I have to "bump" the lever to lift it, every couple of minutes. Time to find and...

    720 starter ring gear

Are ring gears no longer available, or very expensive? Seems to be a lot of work to remove and put the same 60 year old part back on. Also, I assume you are talking about a gasser... on the diesel, after shutting off the fuel I just pull the compression release and hold it until the engine...

    Smoked a thrust washer (70D)

I know mine has been "Frankentractored" over the years since it had 720D decompression and start levers (but 70D pony starter and pedal) when I got it... and I recently finished the conversion to 720D pushbutton start myself  If/when I get the flywheel off again, I'll check but all...
