CIH 1660-Do you remember the first time you drove a combine?

the summer of 1978 I helped a neighbor run his IH 1460. the first combine I drove that I owned was a 1976 IH 715 in 1988. that was a long 13 year stretch. finally bought a 1986 CIH 1620 in 1999 and I still run it. Duane

    843 head

I finally ran some corn and checked my 843 on a 1620. it was cool to the touch. now I have the universal/pto/u-joint type of connector found on the 1000 series and not the hex shaft coupler. not sure why one would be so different from the other. this a nice upgrade. much easier to...

863 corn head is done!!!! Well.....almost.....

I run an 843 on a 1620. I got rid of the hex shaft coupler several years ago. I now use the universal/pto type connector that is used on the 1000 series. works much better and easier than the hex shaft coupler. the hex shaft will wear and coupler will round the hex shaft. we always had to...

    IH 863 gatherer chains

You do not want them too tight. I tried to go by some of the other rows that have the shorter spring and adjust the new ones to the old ones as far as how much tension the chains have. too loose and stuff will get in behind the chains and slip on the sprockets ro come off the sprocket. hth...

    IH 863 gatherer chains

I found a broken one this fall. replaced both of them from CIH. they are longer than the old ones. the book says 1/8-1/4 gap. that to me was still to tight. so I just swagged it. I also replace the shaft for the top drive sprocket of the gathering chain. I found an after market...

IH 863 corn head roller knives

I just changed mine on my 843 head. I was replacing the deck plates as well. with them out of the way you can work on the knives from the top. much easier than from below. the old deck plates came out pretty easy. some people recommend to stand the head up to work on them. hth Duane

CaseIH rotor in spongy cobbed corn

running a 1986 1620 with specialty rotor. had tough time getting it set this year. had to go extreme on the settings to cut down on rotor loss. rotor 650 and concaves just under 3. corn moisture is 24%. any slower and the corn ran out the back and it left corn on the cobs. hth Duane

    IH 863 auger chain block/tightener

on my 843 corn head I stopped worrying about that chain tightener. I did replace 2-3 one year. tried different ways to keep it tight. just kept loosing them. haven't had one on for 4 years. I have not had one issue with the chain. mine runs just fine w/o that tightener. jmho Duane

    56 corn planter

we ran a 6 row 56 planter for 8 years. while it was an improvement over the jd 494a it still had some weak areas. the closing system didn't allow for good seed to soil contact. the markers are weak. have to have a lot of plates. the knockout wheel didn't always work well. I highly recommend...

    560d wont start

wind chill has no affect on gelling. if the wind chill is -40 going down the road but the air temp is -10. the fuel will not be any colder than -10. the wind will lower the temp faster but it can't low the temp below the air temp. fuel is an inanimate object which is not affected by wind...
