    Thanks for the response back. I?m trying to put a C153 into my 404. Like you the C153 doesn?t have the pilot bearing. So I assume you had to pull the crank and had it machine to take the pilot bearing. Did you use the std pilot bushing or did you put in a roller bearing?

    The answer to your question is yes a 460 engine will bolt into a 504 bellhousing. however you will also need the two 460 frame rails as the 504 is not long enough. A C-153 out of a combine WILL NOT bolt into a 504. The 504 C153 has an angular shape block in the rear and the C153 in a combine...

    have you checked the intake manifold bolts and gasket? I had a 404 that was bothering the same way as yours and the bolts were not tight.
