    Well, tried that with various old starter parts. Not hugely knowledgeable though and gave up after no great success, only thinking that it needed a new amateur. So bought a new starter, seems now that wasn't the best choice.

    Okay. So the part number on the tag identifys the starter as 6 volt. A past post indicated that their 6volt starter had been converted to a 12volt.     Yup, have had it rebuilt twice over the last 30 years by someone who is close. He is no longer in business. The nearest now is over 2 hour drive one way. So I'm thinking time for a new starter. May still go for the 4 hours of driving yet though. Thanks all for your inputs.

    Hmmm? Soldered in backwards, copper stud 180° off? I have 2 old parts starters with the copper stud installed that way. And can I for sure not purchase a 12 volt starter for a C? I've seen some indicating that they have 12v for a super C, would they not work with a C?
