MF 85--1959 with 242 CID 4 Cylinder Engine Compression Test

Willowbk, Thank you for the lead--I will follow up on that. I also appreciate the offer about info, and I may need to email you a question or two along the way. Guys, Memorial Day is not far away, and now is a good time to start thinking about those who paid the supreme sacrifice so we...

MF 85--1959 with 242 CID 4 Cylinder Engine Compression Test

ASEGuy, I appreciate the confirmation, and hope it is in the head; but I am concerned that rebuilding the head will created blowby around the rings. This is much like having a teenage daughter: you never have to worry what to do with extra money.

MF 85--1959 with 242 CID 4 Cylinder Engine Compression Test

2Tractor, The Ballast weight on the 85 is 11,200. I am fortunate in that the gentleman that I got it from has a truck and trailer and is hauling it for me. Now that it is mine, I wish there were a dollar sign in front of that 11,200. I spent the day on the Ford 861 bush hogging. I am...

MF 85--1959 with 242 CID 4 Cylinder Engine Compression Test

I will be working on a MF 85 with a 242 CID engine, and cannot find what the compression range should be on the engine cylinders. All I can find is the compression ratio of 7.35 to 1; but I cannot read that on a pressure guage. Also, I am having trouble finding a head gasket set for the...

MF 85 clutch stuck in the engaged position--how do I free up

Soundguy, I ordered the three manuals this weekend: Operator's, Parts, and Repair. I plan to take some "as-is" photo in the next day or so, and will post one or two. I plan to maintain a photo journal as I go along. There will probably be a couple "how-not-to" pics. I have six...

I have just purchased a 1959 M-F 85 (s/n 803762), and am not sure about which engine it has: E-223 or E-242? I know it is a 4 cylinder Continental gas, but do not know what markings to look for in determining which engine. Can you help? Does the tractor serial number offer any...

MF 85 clutch stuck in the engaged position--how do I free up

I appreciate the suggestions, and am game to give them a try. I know I am going to have a few questions about the hydraulics when I get to them. I hope to free up the clutch, replace the engine head gasket, and then tackle the hydraulics. I grew up on a TO20 and a MF-50, so the big Massey...

MF 85 clutch stuck in the engaged position--how do I free up

Just purchased 1959 MF 85, and the clutch is stuck. Tractor had been sitting for a while. Help? Also, can someone advise how to identify whether the engine is an E223 or E242. Serial # 803762. Bought her cheap, but much work ahead. She runs, but compression is down on #2 cylinder, and...

Help Identify Brand of Rotary Mower, continued

Jerry, thank you for the input--I'll try contacting a King Kutter dealer. I agree, I never saw a gearbox mounted like that, and thought it might be critical in identifying the mower. I have been describing it to dealers as having a gearbox that looks like a teddy bear. Should you have...

Help Identify Brand of Rotary Mower, continued

The photos got lost in the posting activity. This is a 5 foot 3 pt hitch rotary mower. I'm seeking help identifying the Make and Model. It is not a Bush Hog®. It is well built, and I am attempting to refurbish it. I am attaching photos, and have additional photos if needed.

Help Identify Brand of Rotary Mower

I inherited farm machinery, including a 5 ft. rotary mower. My father-in-law simply referred to it as a bush hog. I was told by a Bush Hog® dealer that the Bush Hog® name is cast onto the gearbox; and this rotary mower does not have that casting. I need to order parts, but cannot find any...

    Needed--lubrication info for 801/841D

Soundguy has a very helpful post--I'm taking notes... I ordered all manuals this past weekend, waiting for arrival. I figure my time cost more than the manuals. I tinkered with Ferguson TO 20 and M-F 50 as a teenager in the 60's. Helps some with this Ford, but so many things are either (1)...
