Foks: Thank you for all your help. I'm now using 7/16" x 4" shoulder bolts, zipped up tight with the impact gun. I've gone from breaking 1 or 2 bolts per hole to one bolt every 4 holes, and I bet I can improve that further by feathering the drilling speed. As always you help is hugely... -

I've been doing that. The problem is just rock. As soon as I get about a foot down I start hitting fist size rocks, which are big enough for the auger to dislodge, but small enough that they can skip over the lips of the auger (is that what you call the edges of the flutes?) and wedge between... -

Intuitively makes sense to me. It's like a gearing between the shaft and the tube. -

Oh! I gotcha. If I put "down pressure" on the auger by keeping the boom down it won't slip further up than the hole. Makes sense now, and worth a try. I already put a couple of punch marks in the shaft and auger to help me line things up, which helps a lot. -

Sometimes the auger slips down relative to the shaft, sometimes it's held in place by the remnant of the bolt. It never goes up relative to the shaft. -

Unless you can generate enough torque to compress a 4" granite rock into the entirety of CT subsoil without damaging any of the hydraulics it's not gonna work ;). Ultimately it's always going to hang up so you need some sort of relief device to prevent damage. My problem is that my kludged... -

I might try this when I start doing the bigger fields. What I'm doing now is a two man job, and I only have a second pair of hands on the weekend, when I can get all 120 lbs of the little lady to hang off the control bar for some down pressure :) -

Good point. It's not a tight fit anymore. It's not sloppy on the shaft, but it doesn't take any effort to pull the augur off either. -
