Oliver 77 Cracking Hydraulic Pump Center Plate

I would guess that the centerplate that you put in also had a hairline crack but you could not see it, after you put some pressure on it when you started the tractor the crack opened up. If your parts tractor sat outside it most likely got water in it and cracked. I have have had some that...

    1655 shifting and 3 point

I have 2 1655s, One shifts better than the other, shifting can be difficult in over and under, but direct shifts well, R2 is opposite 4th for easy shifting, R2 might be a bit fast for manuvering around trees. Also be aware of freewheeling if working on hills.

Oliver 88 Row Crop won't go into either reverse

Possibly broken rail but I would look at the detent balls that might be rusted, the balls and guides are in front of the transmission, more in the engine compartment, there are 3 rails under a cover if you do not have an endless belt pully or under the belt pulley drive if you have one. good...

Trying to figure out why starter won't engage

have you checked the neutral switch? needs to be in neutral to start, these switches can go bad.

Looking at buying barn find Oliver 88, hydraulic valve question

Pretty easy to change out the hydraulic unit, I would pull the unit anyway and check the center plate as most any tractor that has sat will have a cracked center plate. I pulled a 283 new holland baler with an 88 and it handled it just fine, would make it grunt in heavy hay but always came thru.

I would check points, have seen them close up pretty quickly when new.

1850 Gasser won't start or backfires through the carb when it does.

I would look for an air leak between the carb and cylinders, a small leak will make the carb not work properly, as you run the engine faster it will make the problem less severe, you can check for leaks with starting fluid and see if rpms change.

Oliver 1800 saginaw steering motor pulsating/hammering

This is a new one to me, never heard a sound anything like that before, my guess would be something blocking one of the lines to the PS unit. could be either line as it could be a restriction in supply line causing cavitation or blockage in the return line that needs excesive pressure to push...

Oliver 1800 saginaw steering motor pulsating/hammering

Looks like a great project, power steering should operate smoothly, I would check the flow divider, it should have 2 different springs that have shims. give then a good cleaning. the fact that it is worse in one direction would also lead to flow divider? only other thing I can think of is...

    Location of 310 crankcase vent

I have seen quite a few 310 diesel engines with a vented crankcase, all that I have seen have been in the area of #3 or #4 cylinder, this one came to me from the local tractor mechanic with the hole at #6. 1800 B, unfortunately probably not worh fixing.

    Engaging pto question

usually the reason they will keep running is warped discs, they warp due to getting hot. I dont worry about the pto turning a bit when disengaged. as long as it will stop turning when hooked up to something.
