Connect the wire from safety switch to tab B (the upper one). Leave tab C disconnected. It is for low current loads, like bypassing a ballast resistor on a gasoline engine. It is connected to tab B internally with a thin wire. Chances are that the wire melted when you tried to engage the... -

You made a clear and tidy diagram, so I am probably wrong, but my first thought was that the wire to the ballast resistor has accidently been connected to the ACC post on the key switch. -

Tony, Let us say that you have a 6 V system with a 6 V ignition coil, that have a primary winding resistance of 1.5 Ω. You convert to a 12 V system, keep the ignition coil and add a 1.5 Ω resistor in series with the primary winding. That is the only thing you change in the ignition system. Same... -

A coil is just a piece of wire. If you put 12 V across, you can call it a 12 V coil. In this case, the coil is aimed for a 6 V system and therefore it is called a 6 V coil. -

This is from a manual for Ford 1000-series, they all had 12 V systems. There was a mishap regarding the ballast resistor, see correction at red mark. Both F (Field) and D (Dynamo = Armature) have their ends connected to ground (case), therefore continuity to case and between themselves. I attached a PDF with information that may help. After you have connected everything, polarize the generator like this:
