    electronic ignition

One thing that not many people know is that you need to throw those copper core wires away when you switch to electronic ignition and put the carbon core wires on instead. Learned the hard way on a U that I converted a few years ago. I was told that the copper provides too much resistance. Like...

Charlie Biler has them for both series.

    oil filter

I use WIX 51794. This is the long version and looks like the original canister when painted. Only problem is on some engines you will have to get underneath and grind some metal out of the carve-out on the underside of crankcase in order for the new filter to screw on without binding on the far end.

    RUT crank

Make sure the oil passages get cleaned out. The R crank oils from the rear and as time goes on and the gunk and dirt build up in there it will get blocked and quit oiling the #1 journal. This is a common problem on the old R's. I have run into two of them with this issue in the last few years.

M vs Super M rear end

Fact of the matter is this was a continual problem for IH. Under-engineered rear ends caused the downfall of the company. We are 3 for 3 with these issues. I replaced the outer axle bearing on an M a few years ago and it was no fun getting that old one out...I speak from experience. I can't even...

M vs Super M rear end

My dad has a 1951 M that is all restored and last fall it started crunching and jerking in the rear end, so needless to say it is parked until he decides what to do with it. Does a super M have a roller bearing rear end or does it have the same cheap ball bearings as the M? We know where we...

    5 star seat

As Alan said you could get a seat from an M5 or later tractor and it will bolt right on. My grandpa put one on his 5 Star when they became available in the early sixties. It gives a much smoother ride!

    RTS

Congratulations! That is a very hard to find tractor you have there. There were a few RTS tractors built towards the end of the 1939 model year, but they were never separated out in the serial number lists. All '39 model R tractors were listed as "RT" models. The "S" at the end of your serial...

    White 3 pt lift?

Thanks for your thoughts on the subject. The top link is mounted in the second hole from the bottom right now. Maybe I will try it at the bottom location and see if that adjusts the tilt.

    White 3 pt lift?

We have a White 2-88 that I use to move snow with a Gnuse snow bucket. I wish the 3 point had a higher lift height as it would be easier to pile snow. Also the bucket tilts backwards as it raises instead of tilting forward. The top link bracket has 3 other mounting positions, but I sure can't...

    Farmall M Serial Number

Thanks for the reply. Was there also a high speed fourth gear option for the M? The M had a fairly fast reverse anyways, how fast was the "fast" reverse?

    Farmall M Serial Number

I looked at a mid 40's M recently and it had a XX1 after the six digit serial number. I'm familiar with the X1 but what does the other X mean?

A cool moline picture I must say.

Very nice old Z. It looks great restored with the cultivator! I have always had a soft spot in my heart for the early Z's. That's probably why I have two of them. My grandfather bought one new in March of 1938 and it was his cultivating tractor for many years. Wish I knew where it ended up.

    Rear Gear lube for Moline

I like 140 wt. It runs quieter, shifts easier and leaks less.

    Worst MM tractor?

Seems to me that one of biggest problems MM had was that the engineers were not very good fine tuning their designs. The company made many products that were basically good, but could have used some further engineering or design changes. One of the things that drives me nuts, and I seem to run...
