    Avoid using harsh caustic cleaning compounds as they will attack aluminum and create smut on the surface. Mineral spirits followed with a mild detergent cleaner should suffice. Once the surface is free of grease & oil, deoxidize the aluminum with an aluminum brightener / deoxidizer available...

    I've used crushed recycled glass available in two grades, fine & medium grit on sheet metal w/o warping or leaving a rough surface. After blasting, a DA with 220 quickly eliminates any roughness.

    We switched to SW's Polane two component urethane for topcoats several years ago ~ no complaints so far as ease of application or quality. Primer is a high build epoxy furnished through SW's automotive branch and very forgiving when applied over less than perfect fiberglass surfaces.
