    tractor identify

240U doesn't have a TA or IPTO, in addition to the sheet metal difference.

What is this and how does it work?

Looks very similar to the factory 3 point on my 240U. They are kind of a crude adaptation of the Fast Hitch, using many of the F-H parts. The top link should be a short link with a cast folding "crank" handle. One bad thing is, you can't use a post hole auger  For a drawbar, I use a 3...

How Many Remember Using One of These?

We had a JD pto elevator for part of them and used the hay fork/track for the rest. Needed to get a good layer built up on the hay mow floor before using the fork, as dropping 8 bales at a time too far would break the twine on some. It was also hard on the floor beams if you dropped them all the...

Considering a Tractor, looking for advice.

Just speaking from my limited experience having owned an Oliver Super 55 and now an IH 240U, I'm going to say get something with a good 3 point, PS, live hydraulics and PTO. makes life a lot easier. If I could combine the two I mentioned, I'd have a great tractor... great 3 point and live PTO...

    super c cultavtor colors

As I commented earlier that the shields were blue, but we used "rotary hoe" shields part of the time and they were red like the frame. These shields worked well in the same conditions as any rotary hoe, and it allowed you to travel faster when the corn was small, like you would do with a rotary hoe.

    super c cultavtor colors

Red frames, blue tool bars and shields and black shanks and springs. Pretty sure that was the colors of the one Dad bought new in Feb. '56 with a "carry-over" SC. BTW, I got some of Mom and Dad's papers from my sis a couple weeks ago and the receipt for that deal was included... need to go back...

Anyone have any info on this??

Glad someone corrected me on the Bantam vs. Overland name. I couldn't think of the Bantam name and could only think of Overland which didn't seem right at the time. However, Bantam did get a contract to build a utility trailer that was pulled behind a Jeep for supplies... kind of a kick in the...

Anyone have any info on this??

Many larger companies built equipment designed and also built by smaller companies because they could add manufacturing capacity faster and easier than adding to the smaller ones. GM (TBM and FM-2, both versions of Grumman planes) and Ford (Consolidated B-24) both built airplanes, Studebaker...

    H, vs SH, vs 300/340/350

And don't get so caught up in IH and overlook some other brands, like redgems mentioned. If you use pto equipment like a baler, mower, etc. something with IPTO is handy. If you don't need quite the HP of an H series, a Super C thru 240 is handy as heck, but do not have that IPTO. I had a Super...

    H, vs SH, vs 300/340/350

They're certainly not as common as any of the others listed.

    H, vs SH, vs 300/340/350

Geez... took about a dozen posts before someone pointed out it's a 340, not a 300 or 350. Got two strikes against it... a 340 High Crop would be a real ba$tard tractor, parts for 340 being hard enough to find, but then a HC would be even worse. BTW, I'd go for a 300 or 350 If it were me.

    Dad's 460

I was in Iowa over Memorial Weekend and my nephew that now has Dad's old 460 said he has it in a restoration shop now. He said the guy has done both cars and tractors and has a good reputation, so I hope it's done right and I get pictures when it's done. He had already had most of the mechanical...

IH 450 less desireable than Super M?

Lot of pullers want sheet steel wheels... might have been a puller. I have not used an M or SM much in the field, mostly pulling hay racks and wagons, but did use a 450 a lot one summer. Much prefer the 450. Only problem I noticed after running JDs for several years was it was a gas hog.

    Farmall super c

From what I can see, it's SC except for the alternator. 200 was same except for sheet metal and decals, 230 had a different set-up on Fast Hitch and Touch Control was an option that most did not have. Dad bought a NOS '54 in Mar. '56 and I ran thru '60 while in HS. Very familiar with SCs as I...

    Torque Amplifier Use

My understanding is the early mechanical shift TAs should not be used like "just another gear", only when you need the extra torque to go through a tough spot, either pulling a load on the ground, or with the PTO like a baler. Later hydraulic shift TAs you can use like another gear at any time...
