    It depends on what you expect from a paint job. Do you want it to be super durable show job or do you just want a good look and it's a work tractor. You can save a lot of money and still do a good job with high-end Rust-Oleum or one of the better high quality enamels sold by most dealers...

    Every manufacturer is chasing two markets: homeowners and landscaper/mow & throw. I bought my second Toro three years ago and went for the "industrial strength" model because on our farm, we mow about two acres every 10 days. The Toro works for me.

    JD 3020D 24v problem

    It could be a generator or regulator problem. Do you have the tech manual with the electrical schmatic? Remove wires one by one from the regulator and generator and see if the gen light turns off when the key is off.

    A couple of sources for manuals: Contact Jensales. They have some Hyster manuals and do a lot of ag tractors and industrial. As I remember I got a reprint of the qn-20 parts and service manual directly from Hyster. Now this was 20 years ago but it's worth a shot if you talk to the right person...

    I learned to drive on a Hyster QN-20! To boot, I still have the one Dad bought new in about 1957. I have some manuals somewhere. Will check and let you know how I may be able to help you.

    2950 trans clutch slipping

    Mostly likely the clutch. For a quality job, you'll need a clutch disc, a pilot and throw-out bearing, resurface the flywheel and inspect and adjust the pressure plate. Can't say how long the repair would take but if it has a cab it must be removed. Dealer shops are now getting $175/hour +/-.

    If it has a 3 point hitch, check operation of the lift arms. When was the last time the hydraulic filter was changed and the suction screen was cleaned? Check hydraulic pressure at SCV outlet. Pressure should be 2,900 PSI. Check hydraulic oil flow rate. Jack front of tractor and determine if...

    4020 24v questions (pt 2)

    If your 24 volt system is working there's no need to switch to 12 volt. Armed with a tech manual with the schematic and a top notch automotive electrical shop you should be fine. You can also charge the two batteries independently at 12 volts.

    You are referring to the draft control selection lever. Go to John Deere Publications and download the owners manual OMR28871. It will cover the settings for this function.

    Anti-freeze

    I use good old green anti-freeze in all older equipment. Newer engines with, for instance, aluminum parts may require a different product. Generally, the more often you drain and refill is more important than what product you use.

    Used oil.

    I remember when my uncle spread it on the driveways with great results. After enough of it, the driveways were dust-free and almost as durable as a paved highway. If one did it today you'd be hauled off and put in stocks, maybe worse! I have a waste oil company pick it up.
