    Thanks Lowbuck1010. I probably will take off the fan blade, but that still won't allow room to tip the radiator back far enough to remove. I need to get the steering housing off one way or another and am still looking for suggestions on that.

    This is a 1965 JD 1010W gas engine with a live PTO. I have not used it enough lately to tell if the sound is worse with the PTO engaged. What I noticed is more noise and vibration at higher RPMs. It sounds great at idle.

    No, I haven't touched the oil pump. I found the timing mark and will follow the directions from your reprint to manually set the timing. Last time I tried it cranked for several seconds then backfired through the carb starting a small fire!

    Thanks for your great comments. I confirm that the firing order is in fact 1-3-4-2. The photos from the manual are a a real help - at least I know where the hole for the timing mark is! When I get some more time tomorrow I'll give it another shot.
