What tractors did you drive as a kids?

Starting at age 9, I spent thousands of hours on a Farmall H by the time I left the farm to go to college. Leaving the farm wasn't my best choice ever, lol. But I was young and stupid.

Farmall 140 and a corn picker?

Janicholson, you must be right. I imagine that if there were a market, some company would jump on it. I bet they still make them in India and China though. They make stationary threshers over there :-)

Farmall 140 and a corn picker?

Sorry FastFarmall, I should have been more clear. It's a one-row New Idea model 323. Personally, I've never liked mounted pickers. Too many gears, chains, sprockets, etc, turning two feet away. Also, the guys I've known who had them said that the mounted ones do a slightly better job, but they...

Farmall 140 and a corn picker?

Roger 46, I picked corn with an H when I was a kid back in the '60's. However, the fields were flat, so we never had traction problems. But the 2PR was a two-row picker, no?

Farmall 140 and a corn picker?

Thanks to all for the great responses! It looks to me that I can probably do the job with the 140. I'm about to buy the picker, which is a one-row New Idea (model 323 I think?). I can afford another used tractor if necessary, but it's good to know that I might not need it. Now, to hijack my own...

Farmall 140 and a corn picker?

Thanks for the suggestion, FastFarmall. The backstory to this is that I currently own a good solid 140. I've pretty much decided to grow some feed corn next summer. If I have to, I can buy another tractor, but if I can get away with just the 140, that would, of course, be easier (and less...

Farmall 140 and a corn picker?

Thanks Guys! It's a level and well-drained field. The trailer is shorter, lighter, and has lower side stakes than normal ones do.I'd say the yield will be somewhere from 40 to 70 BPA.

Farmall 140 and a corn picker?

Hi All-- Assuming both machines are in good shape, could a Farmall 140 in low gear pull a one-row corn picker? A moderate variety, not 200-bpa corn. Thanks, Jeff

    Odd Gravely Model Number

PS: meant to add (still editing isn't working for me) that Cheshire's not that far away. Since I've been watching craigslist lately, it seems like there's a fair amount of Gravely stuff around for sale. I could go and buy a couple more tractors at reasonable prices, but my wife would kill me...

    Odd Gravely Model Number

Well, good news-- the guy still has the sulky, so I'm driving up to see it today. On the phone, he said the wheels and bearings are fine. So, if there's no hidden rust, I will buy it. Only wants fifty bucks, which seems like incredibly good luck. More when I get it home!

    Odd Gravely Model Number

Will do! Over the years I've had occasion to buy some farm implements. Anything that works anywhere near fertilizer is usually rotted to bits:-) The guy selling the sulky on Craigslist only wants $50 dollars for it. Trouble is, he only left a reply by email to Craigslist to get in touch with...

    Odd Gravely Model Number

Hey Jeffcat, I live on the Connecticut shoreline near Westbrook. If you want the cart, let me know and I'll go pick it up for you for the price of the cart plus fuel.

Bret that seems to be the outcome here. Although I need to take the hood off and get a closer look at the engine. Here's the sulky I'm looking at, although it may be gone by now:

    Odd Gravely Model Number

Ya know, that's what I thought after I looked at it again last night.Looks like the tongue would be too short, and I'd have to add something, like a hitch kit or an extra bar, to get it to work. Actually, the scrapyard just wants $50 for the cart! Good news is that I know where a regular...
