    Typing

I learned typing in the 10th grade, about 1957, and it is literally the skill by which I have made my living all these years, being a journalist or scribe in my various occupations. I made the progression through manual Royals or Underwoods in my first jobs; then the IBM Selectric which at the...

    Tuesday Truck Pic

With those humongous fender skirts, changing a rear must have been a hoot.

    Milk

Having grown up on the family dairy farm, I don't quibble over the price of milk. In fact, it kinda bothers me to see the price fall the way some of you have reported. I'm gonna have my milk, just tell me how much you want for it.

    Home window replacement OT

I've replaced panes in my windows on several occasions. Bought the panes from a company that makes windows, used a propane torch and putty knife to remove broken pane, and press new pane into place. About a 30-minute job.

Identification of old Ford diesel tractor and value

You can find out a lot about your tractor by going to this site: fordtractorcollectors.com/identify-my-tractor/... This is one of the sites that provides all the excellent information that John Smith assembled through the years. It won't help you determine a selling price, but you will...

    Running a 110 line off of a 220 line...

I went from an electric stove to natural gas. I still needed 110 to power the control panel, so I robbed it from the 220 behind the stove. Nothing else is on that circuit. So far, so good.

    Maglite mini

I have one of the big Maglites that uses four D batteries. I went on line and ordered an LED replacement bulb. It tripled or quadrupled the light it puts out. I like the Maglite, so the $14 or so I paid for the bulb was well worth it to me.

    Online woodworking supplies

Grizzley used to put out a PAPER catalog about an inch thick full of wonderful stuff. Don't know if they still do, and if they do they may charge for it. Woodsmith also had a good catalog.

What knife did you carry as a kid,

Mostly Ka-Bar, mostly trapper style. My favorite was a yellow-handled trapper which disappeared into the knife barrel at Fort Polk Reception Station.

    Sounds of the Past

The calls of bob-white quail (different sound for male and female) out in the field. Haven't seen or heard a quail in 40 years. My dad was an avid quail hunter, and I enjoyed it too. He liked to mess with the male birds, whistling like a female and calling them up. He could bring them up on...

    Oldsmobile

First new car was '67 Cutlass, two-door hardtop, emerald green with black vinyl top, factory Hurst shifter. Wonderful car.

    No TV in the kitchen

I got a color TV (my first) to watch the moon landing. How was I to know it was broadcast in B&W. Good excuse to get a color TV, though.

    Road Trip

On a family trip a few years ago we stumbled across the Baker Hotel, which we had never heard of. Intrigued, we sneaked into the place and had a look around. The aura of the place was palpable, just knowing how back in the day it must have teemed with well-heeled pilgrims coming to avail...
