Gravely Model-L Govenor Sheared in half

Not sure which governor you have but there should be a brass plug below the fill cap. Keep it filled to that level. Also if it is electric start remove the oil plug on the sprocket hub and put a few drops of oil in there.

    generator armature growler

Used them in the Navy 45 yrs ago. Memory is stretching here...wound motor armature with shorted windings will create a local current path between shorted windings. If a changing magnetic field is passed through the short CIRCUIT current will flow and produce it's magnetic field which will make...

    Balance Gears

I dunno. Have been running a few 40 yr old Gravelys with K321's. Balance gears intact... no problems. I think it's an "old wives tale" perpetrated by dopes who don't check the engine oil. Kohlers are great engines. If we want to bash something lets start with B&S.

Gravely Model-L Govenor Sheared in half

I think it's coincidence. The governor has been running a while with no oil. Weight rivets sheared and weights machined their way through the casing. The fan belt isn't critical and should be just loose enough to not flop around.

    '64 Gravely L8 Super

I was a gravely mechanic at a dealership 45 years ago. That doesn't have anything to do with your question except that I know them well and have several that I use today. I brush hog all the time with the L8 on steep hills in the PA mountains at my place. Oil gauge is good advice and your L8...

Yup. Gramp was chief engineer on Great Lakes ore carriers. I guess he had unruly sailors holy stoning something or other.

    Diesel mystery

Exactly correct Al, coffee grounds under the timing window. I didn't start it again. Pulled the pump today and will rebuild it. I do understand about pressure differential on the plungers, I just didn't see anything clogging up the return line. Thanks much for your help. John

    Diesel mystery

Thanks Al. What is the "flex ring"? The drive shaft seals? This is a Roosa Master JDB pump. The shaft and seals stay on the engine when the pump is removed.

    Unknown tool

Way back when... My grandfather called them "Holy Stones" and threatened to have us get on our knees and use them if he wasn't pleased with something we did. I guess Goldblatt has politically correct changed the name to "Rubbing Bricks"

    Diesel mystery

Yes, glass filter and no rubber lines. They are all steel except where the return line connects to the injectors.

    Diesel mystery

Thanks Ron. Would be easy enough to pull off the valve cover and check. But one stuck valve stopping the engine? Could be. The 310 only has three cylinders. But I can pull an injector line and it runs on two.

    Diesel mystery

Thanks Tim. Blocked return is the culprit that comes to mind but I had the the check valve out. The glass ball is clean and the spring is working. Good flow in the out direction, just doesn't seal very well in the other direction but that shouldn't matter (or should it?). I ran it with the rest...

    Diesel mystery

My JD 310 backhoe has been running great for years. A couple days ago the injection developed a problem. Was running fine for a few hours then lost power and quit. Here's what I've checked... Plenty of fuel in tank, Replaced fuel filter, New lift pump, Plenty of fuel flow to injector pump while...
