    JD Head Gaskets or Aftermarket for 40U

    I'm sure John Deere does not make their own gasket kits? Do not pay extra for the John Deere name. Search out quality aftermarket name and go with that? Maybe check out the head gasket make up, but the rest of the gaskets in the kit would be right the make up. Aftermarket is OK.

    Jim; you are correct, its the PTO clutch compartment, it is dry. Drilled hole with cotter-pin is to drain leaking oil that may leak into that compartment. So! you have a oil leak coming into the PTO compartment from the transmission housing or the back PTO gear housing..

    John Deere wrote instructions to retorque their heads when the tractor was hot. Why? When you are using our tractors, the coolant is around 180 to 200 degrees. So finish the retorque on a hot engine, when all engine parts are expanded out, head gasket, bolts, so you seal the head gasket...
