    Brake Wheel Cylinder Sizes

My 850 Owners Manual calls for DOT 3 brake fluid. It was printed at the time the dozer was made. Current parts manuals were created almost 50 years after the dozer was made. Case parts manuals say that the 7/8" bore slave cylinder is the proper one. That is wrong. If they say to use...

    Brake Wheel Cylinder Sizes

I'm using DOT 5 silicone brake fluid, because of the original master cylinders being designed for DOT 3 brake fluid. It is pretty inert, which is why I changed over to it. Since I changed, I have had no corrosion in the brake system. It is not supposed to damage Nitrile O-rings, which is what...

    Brake Wheel Cylinder Sizes

The bore diameter of the G109413 is 7/8", which is the problem that I am complaining about. The original part had a bore diameter of 1-1/8". Just because a manufacturer gives a superseded part number doesn't meant that it is an exact replacement. It seems that companies no longer care about...

    Brake Wheel Cylinder Sizes

Yes, it looks like that. I took a photo of the numbers cast into the remaining old cylinder, and the numbers I listed are correct. The bore measures 1-1/8" and that agrees with the note I wrote 30 years ago when I rebuilt the brakes.

    Brake Wheel Cylinder Sizes

Unfortunately, all those parts are long gone. The piston was trash, too, and I can't find a part number for a 1-1/8" piston, either.

    Brake Wheel Cylinder Sizes

I have an old (1973) 850 Case bulldozer. The "wheel" cylinders for the brakes push levers that mechanically clamp the twin brake discs. The "wheel" cylinder is a single bore with a flat bottom held in place with two 1/4" bolts. A double-ended rod engages the piston in the cylinder and an...

Please Help - Ford 8n Will not run for more that 15 Seco

You said you replaced the coil with one that has an internal resistor. Did you bypass the ballast resistor behind the instrument panel? That could add too much resistance once it warms up.

    8N Front Axle Question

I also see in the Parts Manual that Ford replaced the 8N front axle with NAA parts later on. They used different spacers to position it on the pin. Perhaps that is part of the problem?

    8N Front Axle Question

Where does the axle touch the front motor mount when it is near the distributor number 2 post? Rather than use a bolt, I would weld a piece of flat bar stock to the motor mount in that area. Try various thicknesses of flat stock and use the one that gives you enough clearance, but not any...

    Milling an 8n head

I had to get one resurfaced that wouldn't hold the head gasket between #3 and #4 cylinders. Other than corrosion or erosion, there is no reason to resurface the head. It has been proven many times that just shaving a flat head is not an effective way to increase compression. When increasing...

    Ballast Resistor

I just replaced the ballast resistor on my 2N. I bought the resistor (without the phenolic backing plate) from NAPA and used the old parts to install it. If the phenolic plate had been damaged, I'd have replaced the whole unit.

    3pt disc harrow worth?

Last spring I bought a Dearborn Series D two gang 3-point disc harrow with tight bearings for $40.00 at an estate sale. I had to load it myself, so I trailered my 2N there, hooked it up, and drove back on to the trailer. Other than the usual coating of surface rust, the only damage is a...

    Filled front tires

Drill another hole in the wheel for a second valve stem opposite the original one. Add a second valve stem to the tube. Fill the tube with foam, using the second stem a vent. Easy-Peasey!

Can someone explain this stuff to me?

On the dangling pawl things: They are the parking brake. They engage the teeth in those sectors in front of them. The teeth of both the pawls and the sectors need to be clean and in good shape for them to work. the pawls have to pivot freely to work properly. Get everything in proper...

Can someone explain this stuff to me?

The nuts holding the lower arms to the pivot points are 5/8-18 NF self-locking nuts. The originals were all-metal type, and that is what I use. The original part number is 356087-S8. There is a 5/8 plain washer between the lift arm and the nut. I use hardened USS washers, which are larger...
