    machining an 8n rear axle

    I have a '49 rear axle shaft in my '52 8N. I was wondering if I could have a machinist weld and smooth down a friction ridge that would allow the 52's axle's inner seal to ride on. My concern is the heat from welding process might reduce the strength of the axle? Any ideas? thanks for all...

    inner rear axle seal on '52 8n

    I'm confused, just pulled the right rear axle and noticed the inner axle seal doesn't have a machined surface on the axle to rest itself on. Is this normal? (it's the first time I've done this) thanks johnz
