    More cooling fun!...not..head gasket?

Put a brand new head on today. Ran it up to temp, let it cool off, retorqued the bolts, then spent 30 mins dragging the back 40. Radiator didn't burp once, temp never got above 170* on the gauge, oil still looks like oil. Guess I got the only flathead that managed to mix oil and water due...

    More cooling fun!...not..head gasket?

Happy...sure...but still highly annoyed that I couldn't see it before spending hours sanding this thing down. It wasn't like I didn't look, or assumed it was fine. I did spend a solid hour looking at it closely before I started down this road, and now I'm going to be down another week while...

Today I learned a flathead somehow violates the laws of physics. And there's absolutely no need to yell at people. Go have an aneurysm with someone else.

At least half the times I've popped head gaskets in my cars I've ended up with chocolate milk in the pan... Not saying it can't be a block crack, but a leak in the head can certainly do it. That said, if the block is toast, then it's new tractor time. I'm not putting that kind of money/time...

Well....poo...:cautious: I swear, I was staring at this thing for an hour under every angle of light, took a dozen closeup photos and still zoomed in...and I couldn't see it until I was just about done with the coarse paper and ready to go on to the fine grit paper...

Looks like casting flaws or prior scratches to me...🤷🏻‍♂️ Ground one down a bit (still need to go back over it with a fine disc to smooth it out a bit more), the other doesn't look like a crack at all to me.

Would I do this on the heads on the high compression 489ci BBC in the Pontiac that I have thousands wrapped up in? Hell no. But I've done a few dozen small engine heads this way over years with good results. For that matter, people would lose their minds if they knew how many aluminum heads...

    More cooling fun!...not..head gasket?

Well, I figured I could either spend my time on the phone and Internet trying to find something, then drive a couple hours there and back... Twice. Or I could spend my time trying to fix something. I live in an area that has all the meth and dollar stores you could want, but anything useful...

    Unknown lever

I was experimenting with both modes while running a box blade down the driveway. It doesn't feel like it's binding at all, rather more like there's an excessively heavy detent spring to overcome that is difficult to do from the seat. Once I get it moving, it easily snaps to either position.

So I called some machine shops locally, and got responses of "we might be able to get to it in a week or so...", and the cost to magnaflux and mill it were close to the price of a new head anyways. I really got the feeling that no one wanted to do this small job, and preferred to prioritize...

    Unknown lever

Is it normal for that thing to be a PITA to move? It's not like it's stuck or on a bad bushing.. Just more like it's in a bad spot with no leverage while sitting on the seat for me, and takes a decent amount of force to flip it unless I get off the tractor.

Fair price for a 2N fair to good condition

So you're saying that overloading your equipment causes problems? Put a 1500lb round bale on a spear, then go bouncing it down the field, and the leverage is insane. Hang it off something like a 3400 with a 2K rate at the pin, and you're absolutely going to break things...no different than...

Fair price for a 2N fair to good condition

Well then that means my 8N is grossly overloaded with just an empty bucket on the loader....which I would agree that it is absolutely overloaded 😅. Put more than about 200lbs in the bucket, and steering becomes virtually impossible. Having to be an acrobatic circus clown just to get on/off...

#2 spark plug notably cleaner than the other three. Same with #2 cylinder in the block. Though my thinking is more that compression pressure is getting out more than water getting in the cylinder. I'm assuming these dark spots in the fire ring may be indicative of an issue as well?

I mean, don't get me wrong - I'd LOVE to fully strip this thing down, and rebuild it properly grill to hitch. Problem is that I've already got one project in the garage that can't be moved, and I don't have any other good area to split the tractor and leave it while I have the motor apart...
