    Voltage Regulator or Generator

Hi Guys! Success! I had an old 8N voltage regulator that a friend gave me when he had switched is tractor to 12 volt years ago. Funny, the date stamped on the part was 1949. (My birth year). It took me about a full day and a lot of sore fingers to get mine off and his on. Thought I'd have...

    Voltage Regulator or Generator

Thanks. I'll go down and do that. And I am going to take it to a Battery Shop to have it "load tested" today.

    Voltage Regulator or Generator

So if it shows 8 volts while running at half-throttle, that's good, right? But if I'm really running it hard under stress, could the battery not be able to keep up? I'm gonna see what I can find out about testing a battery under stress...

    Voltage Regulator or Generator

When I increased the throttle by half a bit, it just stayed at eight volts. Didn't try it at high RPM though.

    Voltage Regulator or Generator

You may right. I confess to adding near a half gallon of distilled water to it this morning. How do I test a 6 volt battery that shows it has 7.0 volts? But another thing I noticed is that the tractor's round volt meter on the dash was showing a discharge instead of a charge while I was...

    Voltage Regulator or Generator

Hi Guys! My 8N died last Saturday while brush hogging. Found that the battery was drained to less than six volts and it quit in the field. I took the battery out and put it on the charger overnight. Then let it sat unhooked for 24 hours. Checked it again and it showed 7.0 volts all day...

    Starter or solenoid bad?

Yes thanks, I wrote the numbers on the distributor cap! It ran that one time because I rotated the cap 180 degrees. But the cap didn't click in place like it should and the wires were all tangled, so I probably tried to straighten that all out.

    Starter or solenoid bad?

Hi "Soaked" and all you guys. Turns out the issue WAS the timing. My distributor was rigged up 180 degrees off. Not by me, mind you, but by a previous owner. The number one plug wire needed to be facing AWAY from the coil, the exact opposite of where it's supposed to be, according to Ford...

    Starter or solenoid bad?

You say the I posted this back in 2020? Dang! Looks like I had this issue back then. I'm old and forget things!

    Starter or solenoid bad?

Hi Guys...well I've watching the inspection hole a lot lately. I actually found a hashmark going straight across the fly wheel. Is THAT top dead center? I also saw a continuing line that moved gradually across the flywheel as you rolled it forward. Could that be the timing degrees before or...

    Starter or solenoid bad?

Thanks. Mine must be 180 degrees out, so I will mark the that one, and search for the TDC on the compression stroke

    Starter or solenoid bad?

I will once I roll the crank 180. Thanks

    Starter or solenoid bad?

You must be right that I am not on the compression stroke. The points are wide open (.025). Will try fining it again 180 degrees later.

    Starter or solenoid bad?

When the plug hole puffs out your finger, isn't that the power stroke?

    Starter or solenoid bad?

Wow guys. Thanks. This morning I actually found the TDC mark on the flywheel. It's sitting almost at "0". And I think it was on the power stroke. (There's not two marks on the flywheel, are they?) I pulled off the distributor cap and rotor. The points are wide open and about to be closed...
