    Observation at 7-11 today..

So the price of candy bars went up last week because the US dollar went off the gold standard many decades ago. Got it. For that to hold water, there should have been a corresponding increase in the price of gold and silver when the price of candy bars went up. But gold and silver have been...

    Observation at 7-11 today..

Actually it does. Any introductory course in economics will cover monopolies and how the laws of supply and demand apply to them. Of course, the candy bar industry is not a monopoly. Neither is the tortilla chip business.

    Measuring hydraulic force

I think the best way would be to measure the hydraulic pressure with a gauge, then use that to calculate the force. 100 percent of the fluid pressure will be converted to linear force, which you calculate by multiplying the pressure times the cross-sectional area of the cylinder. In order to...

    Shop lighting

Hmm. My T8 fixtures are over twenty years old and I think I've replaced just one bulb in that time. The electronic ballasts are all original and the lights fire up even when it's well below freezing in the shop. When I start replacing bulbs I'm sure I'll replace them all with LEDs, but for...

    Observation at 7-11 today..

Sorry, but that doesn't jive with basic economic theory. Prices go down when demand goes down or supply increases, and they go up when demand rises or supply decreases. Also, suppliers will ALWAYS try to increase their prices to maximize profits. In other words, they keep jacking up prices...

Dust Control on Gravel Farm Road

Our county road commission has several brine wells. They use it for deicing in the winter and dust control in the summer. Yep, they salt the roads year-round. Now you know why they call this the Rust Belt.

    Steering don't work

Engine oil pressure light? That would seem to be a separate issue. Possibly a bad oil pressure switch or maybe a shorted wire. Unplug the switch and see if the light goes out. "Seems"? I would think this would be binary: Either they work or they don't. Will they operate a remote...

    Power washer issues

Replacement pumps are available and not terribly expensive. There should be a data plate on the pump that will tell you the manufacturer and model number. Then just google that info to find an exact replacement.

    Review of string trimmer reviews

I find it a bit hard to believe that Ace gave away 385 trimmers in exchange for favorable reviews. That said, I don't think a $100 string trimmer is going to be very good. Heck, they're practically giving them away at that price anyway.

    Struggling to run - 861

If the carb is actually running rich, all of the spark plugs will be black. If only some of the plugs are black or wet, the carburetor is not your problem. Pull the plugs again and see what they look like. I suspect you still have one or two missing cylinders; this can be confirmed by pulling...

    Frost-free hydrants

Stay away from no-name hydrants like those sold at TSC; you'll never find repair parts for them. I have personal experience with both the Woodford Iowa hydrant (made, ironically, in Colorado Springs) and the Merrill Any Flow. Both are good hydrants that will last for decades and for which...

    Frost-free hydrants

You will need two large pipe wrenches (or one pipe wrench and a large Crescent) and a couple of pieces of pipe six to eight feet long. It's easier with a helper. Or two.

    Trailer Questions

For your application, I think buying a truck is a Really Bad Idea. Right off the bat, a truck will need plates and insurance. Trailer plates are cheap compared to truck plates, and trailers don't need insurance. (If you want to insure the trailer for collsion and comprehensive, that's fine...

    Trailer Questions

The brake requirement is a function of the maximum trailer weight. Since pretty much all tandem axle trailers have a gross weight rating over 3000 pounds, they all have brakes. I would say don't worry about the trailer having brakes; you need something big enough to haul your equipment. If...
