    1937 B is backfiring

I opened up the idle screw as recommended by Lee B with positive results. The manual says open it 1.5 turns, I've got it more like 3.5 turns and everything is working WAY better! Not perfect, but not sure I expect perfect from a 75 year old tractor. I believe JR's comment about the governor...

    1937 B is backfiring

That makes a ton of sense to me. You're correct - it's not technically a backfire I guess. In extreme cases flame shoots out the exhaust stack, but nothing bad is happening at the carb. I will try what you suggest. It may take a while before I can visit the farm again, but I will report...

    1937 B is backfiring

My 37 unstyled B misses and backfires when lightly loaded or when engine braking downhill. It runs just fine when under load or pulling uphill. I have been through all the timing elements multiple times and am convinced this is not the problem. Good spark at each plug, which are both new...

    Unstyled B running rough

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I will do some further investigation when I can get back to the farm. I feel confident the flywheel is mounted correctly on the crank. Some work with the timing light is in order. How do I tell whether I have a 25 or 30 degree cup in my Wico mag? All I'm...

    Unstyled B running rough

I have a 1937 unstyled B that has had a complete engine rebuild, and has a new magneto and a professional carb rebuild. While it runs, it is difficult to start. It runs pretty well when under load, but misses and backfires when idling or running downhill. I have confirmed that the mag timing...

Unstyled B - reinstalling axle bearings

Forum members were very helpful with advice that worked for removing the inboard and outboard bearing races from the rear axle casting on this tractor. Now I am ready to install the new races - any good advice? My current plan is to freeze the races to shrink them and rig up something with a...

Rear Axle Bearing Race Removal - JD B

Now that I have the old ones out, anybody have a good idea for pressing the new races in? My plan was to get them cold in the freezer, then either drive them in with the "hammer and socket" approach, or rig up a way to pull them in using a long threaded rod. Any suggestions appreciated!

Rear Axle Bearing Race Removal - JD B

I applied the wirefeed welder as several of you instructed and it worked very well! The races are all now lying on the shop floor. Thanks for the help - I never would have dreamt up that solution!

Rear Axle Bearing Race Removal - JD B

I'm working on replacing inner and outer axle bearings on my unstyle JD B. Before I start on this, does anyone have any good advice for pulling the races out of the axle housing?

Unstyled B - can't get oil to the tappets

I spent some time on this last night. Per bj's suggestion, removed the fan shaft and checked to make sure the weep hole was pointed downward. Turns out the fan shaft will only install to the governor in one position - bolt pattern is not symmetric, and weep hole does appear to be down. The...

Unstyled B - can't get oil to the tappets

Thank you all for your replies. I have not tried running the engine with the line detached from the governor, but it is detached from the tappet cover. Eric, the serial number is 32485. On the fan shaft housing topic....I don't recall exactly how I decided which end was up when I reassembled...

Unstyled B - can't get oil to the tappets

I am restoring a '37 B. I have good oil pressure to the governor (and gauge) and can turn the pressure up or down with the pressure regulator on the governor. But I can't seem to get any oil down the oil line to the tappet cover. The oil line is clean and open, and the governor has been...

820 pony motor won't engage flywheel

We have a JD 820 that has been used occasionally for the past 20 years - just for fun. For most of that time, we just bump started it, but finally got the pony motor running this weekend. Problem is, we can't get the pinion gear to engage the flywheel. The pinion is clearly spinning (when the...

1937 JD Model B Oil Pressure Problem

All excellent suggestions - I appreciate the help! One thing I haven't done is taken the filter body off - maybe need to inspect that more closely. Also, I will check all internal oil lines again just to be sure. Not sure when I'll get this all done, but I will report back.

1937 JD Model B Oil Pressure Problem

I am restoring a 1937 Model B. I've completely rebuilt the engine and the good news is I got it back together and it actually runs! The problem I have is I can't get oil pressure to register on the pressure guage (a new evergreen restorations guage). When I take the guage off with the engine...
