    Smoke but no fire

ne of the most common mistakes is getting the pump out of time 180 degrees. Remember that the 585 valves are different than all other MM the first valve at the front of the engine is an Intake not an ex so if you are rolling the engine over to get it on top dead center firing position on #1 cyl...

setting the timing on my ub

rotate engine clockwise looking at it from the front. Watch #4 valves when exhaughst valve closes and intake just starts to open that puts #1 cyl on compression and ready to fire. Line up rotor to the # one plug wire and you will be close enough to fire the engine.

    Red diamond

The 310 block is taller than an 88 I have built both. The bearing book I have is a clevite and they list all sizes and how many brgs an engine has. If the rd is the same # of cyl same length and same deck height it should be considerd an acceptable replacement block and natpa does. I have no...

    Red diamond

310 block is a taller deck height than an 88 so by that logic the 501 should be ok in the wk 40 now.

    Red diamond

they never put 730 or 830 5 main blocks in a 400 and they definitely didn't use a diesel manifold on a gas tractor

    5 start clutch question

Depends on how much power you plan on making. If under 600 cid. a 6 pad should be fine. If over 600 you will want a custom button clutch with higher spring pressure on the pressure plate. If over 700 I would use a G1000 flywheel it has a 14 inch clutch instead of a 12.

    605 crankshaft

they all have same number of teeth they just have a different size nose for the pulley. You use the gear off the small nose crank to put the g crank in the later style engines

Keystone piston rings for a 585 Herk.

I would recut the ring groove to a square slightly wider and more commonly available ring. Have done it several times for piston ring grooves that have been hammerd out. Much cheaper than new pistons and will last just as long.
