Forgot to answer the first part of your post. The nameplate above the left foot plate that has the serial has "474" imprinted.

Sorry, I guess I should have been more explicit. There is a tube but no dipstick in it.

    IH474

Just bought a IH474. There is no dipstick to check the hydraulic fluid level. I couldn't find a plug on the side of the housing. I downloaded a user manual and didn't find it there either. (I did find out how to refill it.) I removed the drain plug and I found metal chips as I expected. Now I...

    Perkins 4.236 diesel

So, a 4.236 or 4.248 perkins engine from the 200 series would bolt on to the mf180?

Yes, I have found that to be true. Thanks for your reply. I see you are from Wales. My wife and I spent a day in Conway a few years ago. We envy your weather today. 100 degrees and 105+ heat index.

    Perkins 4.236 diesel

Thanks to the folks who posted replies to my original post about my engine. I still need some advice about the second half of my post. Will any perkins 4.236 fit in my old MF 180 tractor? Bobcats, welders and such use the same motor and I would think it would fit. I have emailed a couple of...

    Perkins 4.236 diesel

No, bought it from small town tractor repair shop in Alabama and the machine shop is in Mississippi. I believe that there was not enough freeplay and every time I pressed the clutch in that the massive pressure plate was pushing the entire assembly towards the motor. The battery box was loose...

    Perkins 4.236 diesel

I agree that freeplay on the clutch pedal. When I bought the tractor the battery box wasn't secure and the clutch mechanism is attached to it. I welded the battery box to the frame but didn't adjust the clutch. A terrible lesson learned the hard way. I purchased a repair manual after the motor...

    Perkins 4.236 diesel

I put 200 hours or so after I bought it so I don't think that is the problem. One of the reply posts mentions freeplay on the clutch pedal. When I bought the tractor the battery box wasn't secure and the clutch mechanism is attached to it. I welded the battery box to the frame but didn't adjust...

    Perkins 4.236 diesel

He called around and tried to find a shop to build it up. He said it was too bad. When we tore it down, we found that it had been rebuilt. Four of the valves had been replaced. The locater screw in the rocker arm assembly was laying in the head. Still a good tractor and I am going to repair it...

    Perkins 4.236 diesel

Thrust washers crapped out on me and ruined my block and crank. The engine shop said too much clutch pressure is the problem. Will any perkins 4.236 diesel from say a bobcat or whatever bolt up to a MF180? Thanks for your input.
