    IH 656 PTO re-install

    Mrfred54, I washed the tractor yesterday, but didn't have time to really inspect that area. Previously that side and rear was always very wet, so it is a significant leak. If it is that easy, I will be a happy camper

    I pulled the long shaft out of the rear-end and cleaned up the splines in the coupler, got it together and now my pto works! Last leak to fix is in the lift and draft control area, but that scares me a little.

    My forearm is too big to fit in that hole, lol. I ended up pulling the shaft out, the coupler has lots of sharp burrs at the start of the spline. I am using a chainsaw file to smooth things up, then it should slide right in, I hope

    When I removed it, I couldn't pull it by hand, so I went in whit a pry bar and it came loose with a slight tap. Should the coupler come off easily from the long shaft inside? Wondering if it does, I could install coupler on pto then try to slide it in

    I rebuilt the PTO in my 656. The problem is I can't get it back into the tractor, the splines wont go back into the shaft coupler in the rear end. I spent 2 hours fighting it. I was afraid to beat it with a hammer, or try pulling it in with bolts. It's not supposed to be this hard, is it? And I...
