    Machine shop prices?

I just called a machine shop that was recommended to see what it would cost to have a John Deere A crankshaft worked on. To have the rod journals welded and ground back to standard and have the mains checked/polished they quoted $460 and a month and a half wait to get it back. To have the block...

    Kohler Dying... Part 3

I don't recall if it was mentioned previously but the old Kohler's were known to have issues with exhaust valve sticking. I have a few of the older cub cadets w with the k series Kohler's and I was told to run a little Marvel mystery oil in the fuel to help keep the combustion chamber clean and...

    Oversize 2 cyl pistons?

Looking at some oversize pistons to put in my 1944 John Deere model A. The tractor had .045 over cast pistons in it as well as the later A4648R rods when I got it and I was thinking of having it bored for .090 high compression pistons. I'm scratching my head though because most places only show...

720 lp jd right side of rearend won't turn it's stuck help

Have you checked that one of the brakes isn't stuck? Sure sounds like a good possibility that it's the culprit.

Ooops, someone had a flat tire

Well, I can only wonder why they had a blowout looking at that load. Sure looks like the fender could have been digging into that tire and caused the tire to fail if the heavy load wasn't enough.

    John Deere A cam

Thanks for the info! Any place in particular that does that kind of work that I should consider? How much should I plan to pay for this?

    John Deere A cam

Is it worthwhile sending the cam out to have it checked out and reground if needed? I didn't realize how much was involved in removing it. The tractor is coming just about all the way down for a rebuild anyway and I'd like to know that its good to go for the long haul. Not sure how prone...

    Johnson manifold vs. gas manifold?

Thanks for the info. Are any of the new gas manifolds of good quality and not made in China? I haven't really looked into used ones. I figured I wouldn't find any much better than I already have. I'll look into them.

    Johnson manifold vs. gas manifold?

Looking at replacing the manifold on my A. Is there really that much a benefit from a Johnson cold gas manifold over a factory gas one? Poking around on the net didn't come up with much info on them. I'm guessing that the extra $$$ will be better spent on a gas head since this tractor still has...

    Model A questions

My 1944 model A I'm currently working on came to me with a few "farmerized" additions. Most of which I'm guessing are from a late A or model 60. It was a running and driving machine when I purchased it from a guy that deals in old tractors out of Wisconsin. It came to me with what I assumed was...

Sometimes you just have to wonder...

Hopefully the pictures will post, been awhile since I've tried to upload some. Opened up the crankcase on my 44 John Deere A to clean the years of gunk out of there and I found this. Not sure what they were thinking when they cobbled this together. Had worn into the metal line a ways but...

    Model A flywheel removal?

I did give it some heat and a few raps with a small sledge hammer to no avail. Maybe I'll take a block of wood and get a bit nastier with it next time.

    Model A flywheel removal?

Trying to remove the flywheel on a 44 slant dash tractor. How does the casting for hand starting with the steering wheel come off of the flywheel itself? I thought it was just bolted on but after removing the bolts it refuses to come off. What am I missing here? I'm also not sure how I am...

    Seat cushions

Who makes good replacement seat cushions for a model A? Each back rest and cushion I find available seem to look a bit different from the next. I don't have the original ones for my tractor so I'm not sure what they should look like.
