    Starter issue?

I don't know how my name appeared instead of the moniker.

    Starter issue?

I rotated the ring gear and found maybe a third of the teeth looked like those in the pic. Would you guys replace ring gear? So far it has started normally since the initial problem.

    Starter issue?

Thanks, FM. That sounds clear and easy(fingers crossed). Rolling won't be a problem. Tractor is in barn.

    Starter issue?

The zerk fitting covered the 2nd hole so I removed it and drove the roll pin out. Now I am suppose to rotate the PTO shaft and observe the ring gear rotating, correct? I assume the engine will turn over in this process so I should be in 3rd gear and remove spark plugs Correct? I expect a lot of...

    Starter issue?

I have an over running clutch which I must remove to crank the pto. How do I remove it? There is a screw which I removed and the clutch would pull off about 1/4" but that is all. See pic. What next?

    Starter issue?

Thanks for all the comments. It seems everyone is in on the same page. I am forewarned now about the expen$e.

    Starter issue?

The ring gear has one tooth that is partially damaged from a mishap years ago. Tractor has started easily since then so I don't think that tooth is a problem. Yesterday when I removed the starter all of teeth in the ring gear I could see were fine. Can't rotate the ring gear to inspect all...

    Starter failure in Ford 641?

The starter shaft and gear appear to be AOK. No marks or uneven wear. It must be harder steel than the ring gear which is opposite of what I would expect - I had rather have to replace a starter than the ring gear!

    Starter failure in Ford 641?

I removed the starter and immediately I noticed it was slightly bound and had to pry lightly with a screwdriver. I noticed 3 cogs on the ring gear had their corners rounded rather coarsely (don't know how to load pics). Starter turned easily so I reinstalled it and all is a well as can be...

    Starter failure in Ford 641?

A detail I omitted in the original post may be significant. When I converted from 6 to 12 VDC a decade ago my tractor would start in about 0.1 seconds. Just a quick push of the button did the trick. But yesterday, it cranked but didn't start in that 0.1 sec so I immediately pressed it again and...

    Starter failure in Ford 641?

I'll try that. First, I surely would like to get it to the barn where my tools are to work on it.

    Starter failure in Ford 641?

I tried that but I didn't give it a heavy push - just enough until I met resistance.

    Starter failure in Ford 641?

I pressed the starter switch and heard only the solenoid click but no cranking. After only a few seconds the battery cable was very warm. I disconnected the + cable from the starter and attempted to jump the starter with a good battery with the negative connected to the block and the positive to...

3 point lift failure in cold weather

This AM it is 25 degrees so I started the tractor and the hydraulic lift worked perfectly. So water in the oil must not have been the problem. Perhaps it was just sediment or similar crud that finally dissipated when I changed the hyd oil.??? Thanks for all the replies.

3 point lift failure in cold weather

Well, I have done nothing more to my 3pt lift hydraulics. However, the temperature rose to near 70 today and the lift works perfectly! Sounds like a viscosity issue but I am using 10 -20 wt hyd oil as specified in the manual. I don't get it but I am OK with it for now.
