I can't define it. There is no air hissing out the valves and no crankcase blow-by to speak of, so I'm just going by how it sounds when I crank it over with the starter generator befor it first starts up. Remember I've been running this very engine for 25 years and I really know what it sounds...

OK, Yes I get that. I had closed them way way up hoping to stop some of the spark-knocking when it was so hot. So now it's time to get back to spec. Thanks for offering. mpb

OK, thanks. The engine runs like a swiss watch. No misfire. Points are NOT gapped to spec. I had closed them way way down to get a little retard in timing because when it was so so so hot I could hear it spark-knock. Closing them didn't make any difference wence it got so hot, but I'll bet...

Ok thanks Dave. No bent valves, I just replaced the head gasket. 2 years ago it chirped at initial cold start up, so I tightened the bolts a little and it went away for another year. But last year it came back. Again I tightened them a little and it stopped, but I didn't like that much torque on...

I have a 1973 IH Cub Cadet 129 Hydrostatic with a 42" mower deck and a Kohler K301 engine. I'm experiencing a loss of power. I had been overheating it due to a plugged up air inlet screen on the flywheel/ cooling blower, but I fixed that. It seems to run good now, but it's down on power and can...
