JD 40 Fuel Line Size / Intermittent sputtering
I diagnosed mine as more of a double/cross fire instead of a backfire. I had bought standard automobile spark plug wires from O'Reilly and read somewhere it needed the copper core wires with the straight steel terminals. I ordered a set and it runs a whole lot better. John Deere M starter removal
I had to replace the starter spring on my M last summer and I pulled the gas tank. Keep in mind I was tearing everything down to paint anyway but if I remember correctly there was a couple bolts in the bottom of the enclosed section of the battery box that would be practically impossible to get...- nmpfeiff

Did you ever figure this out? I have a 1951 M that does the exact same thing! Sometimes it will run perfect (pop, pop, pop, pop) and other times it sputters and backfires. The tank is clean and coated and the carb is new/re-manufactured. Adjusting the carb does nothing to improve the condition...- nmpfeiff
