    Ford 9N won t move

When you say oil leak, there is many places that can happen. If it is by a wheel then you may have oil getting past the axle seals at the end of the axle shafts which would and could be getting to the brakes, this leads to poor stopping. What you want to check is how oily is the weeping hole...

    Ford 9N won t move

This sound like it may be a clutch problem. The clutch may be worn out or it has become oil/grease soaked and no longer has the "traction" to move the tractor but it has enough to move the wheels and PTO with no load on them. Or the clutch may be improperly adjusted. But since you were using...

    Will it start?

One thing to make sure of when looking at the distributor. Coil has a spring that must contact the screw below. I have had in the past this spring being to short to contact the screw and the spring from the coil being burnt up. In the case of the the spring being to short I just had to...

9N rear axle bearing replaced and needs adjustment

An Update: All parts have been properly placed in. New bearings seated all the way to the shoulder mark on the axles. New outer seals, Sure seal installed with greased bearings. I did have to use 6 shims/gaskets (one was metal) to get to the point of no drag on the opposite side. So when...

9N rear axle bearing replaced and needs adjustment

I guess I didn't explain which race I was referring to. The outer race that sits in the Bearing cap was seated properly and Fully. The inside race that is pressed onto the shaft was 3/16" away from the shoulder on the axle. ( A heat shrink retainer ring keeps it from sliding further toward...

9N rear axle bearing replaced and needs adjustment

I did look at the ends, they look polished as if they have in the past been rubbing. So I decided to go ahead and swap out the bearings and replace the outer seal while I had it out. Come to find out the race on the bearing was not seated all the way to the stop, about 3/16". Could this be...

9N rear axle bearing replaced and needs adjustment

Nice picture, and that helps understand the situation. I think the only thing left for me to do is to replace the bearings, they must be worn to give up that much end play. Either that or the axles have gotten a tad shorter.

9N rear axle bearing replaced and needs adjustment

Update and new question. I pulled the axle from the new side and reassembled it carefully and it went together much easier. Plus the wheel now turns freely. When one side turns the opposite wheel turns in the opposite way as well, good i guess. My new concern is that there is now 3/16...

9N rear axle bearing replaced and needs adjustment

Thanks for the reply! I did as the manual says and following the advice here on the board. When I lifted the tractor up and removed the other wheel I pulled on this axle and found it has 1/4" + end play. Now I am confused some. The side I am working on has no end play yet the nuts are not...

9N rear axle bearing replaced and needs adjustment

Thanks for the tips! that was a great read and is now affirming what I thought needed to be done. I ordered at least six paper shims and if they come in a pack as you say then I should have plenty. I also ordered one metal shim as well. hopefully that will be enough to get me up and running...

    Help!!!! with 2N

I just finished doing the brakes on my 9n Tractor and I believe the 2n is similar. Have you taken the 6 bolts on the outside of the trumpet off? these on the 9n hold the whole outside assembly together as well as hold the axle in place. Once removed the whole assembly with the axle will come...

    Help!!!! with 2N

I just finished doing my 9N brakes and had some trouble too. I believe the 2N is similar to the 9n. Have you removed the 6 bolts from the outside of the trumpet? These bolt hold the wheel brakes and axle in place on the 9N and you cannot get to the brakes without pulling the whole outside...

9N rear axle bearing replaced and needs adjustment

Thanks for the reply!, I do have a manual, I&T shop manual for the ford 9N,2n and 8n. It is pretty good and the procedure for adding shims looks like it will be time consuming as one has to add a shim then tighten everything up, check preload, take apart if not correct, and repeat. Unless you...

9N rear axle bearing replaced and needs adjustment

I have a 9n tractor that was leaking oil really bad on the right side. I decided to replace the outer seal, bearings and added a sure seal and greased the new bearing. In the process I did a brake job on this side as the shoes were totally oil soaked. I am now reattaching the axle, brake...
