The Hardest Way My Elders could think to do it

I did not grow up on a farm. But over 30 years ago I wanted to get into farming. I was fascinated by square balers, so started baling hay on the neighbor's old pasture. Because we did not know better, we dropped bales on the ground, and stacked hay by throwing them up onto the stack. Eventually...

So now I'm down to one 70 year old spreader!

Last week I had a 1 hour job of cleaning our sheep barn out before company showed up for dinner. Well, I loaded it way up to get it 'all' and don't you know the web broke. So then I got to spend another hour forking it all out. And, I still need to repair the thing. Rotten bottom boards...

OT - Timothy Dust and Mold

So l have a field of late orchard grass and early Timothy. I baled on June 10. But I like to cut my orchard grass alfalfa mix 2-3 weeks sooner. the straight grass is easier to dry, plus it tends to be warmer days plus longer days. Rarely a problem. Earlier alfalfa mix is a challenge. Ted it 3 times.

When You Can Not Do it Yourelf

Obviously I am very lucky. I have had my wife, son, youngest daughter and a sister all run the baler over the years. They also Ted and sometimes rake. Wife mowed hay when I was out of town. It's hard work and not always easy to do correctly. And not easy to be silent about the goof. I try and am...

    Stub guards to regular

I had a 469 and eventually I replaced the pivot bearing under the bar that drives the sickle knife. The knife cut much better once that bearing was new again. Too much slop caused the knife to go up and down some.

NH Haybine Should the Sprocket drive-pins look like this?

All four are spring loaded and should stick out. So, break them loose. Maybe the springs are shot. I had a 461 which only had 2 drive pins. The 469 has four which make it twice as strong. A basic mechanical improvement over the 461.

    New Holland 271 Baler.......

Ok, so sounds like the NH banana bale thing. (I have always run JD balers which do not do that) several advice things I have read on this site: buy a manual if you don't have one,, they really make it simple to get these machines working well. And, apparently the aluminum feeder forks wear...

    OT, used truck

Add says IDI,on Diesel in the 93. So, assume non-turbo. So, here is my deal: I put about 5,000 miles a year on my truck, hauling fire wood, hay for sale, occasional livestock. Pull a trailer + truck total about 2 tons of hay. Currently run a 89 F250 auto, with 120k miles on it, but rust has got...

    OT, used truck

also, on the diesel, how is cold weather starting? It can easily get to 10 deg here in winter (not this year) so how does that factor in?

I'm am thinking about buying a used F350. Couple for sale, so am looking for advice:1988 with 460 gas, manual transmission, about 100K miles. 1993 diesel with auto transmission, 160K miles. Thoughts on engine + transmission combo assuming other issues are similar? Also, the 93 has more...

    wood spliter engine

so, I have a used wood splitter I bought about 3 years ago. Has a B&S engine on it. I used it this summer and noticed the aluminum block is cracked, on the bottom, where it bolts down to the splitter frame. I suppose since I normally ran it in cold weather the oil did not leak out as noticable...
