I started in on front end saturday, I took off the front grill & cover plate, removed the mouse nest & cleaned everything up a little, had my wife turn the steering wheel with the engin off & with a flashlight watched everything move back & forth & up and down, the steering arm, actuating arm... -

I was talking to a guy that claims he has 3 of these 5000 & he said that the loose steering is a common problem & then he said that all of his had the loose steering & he fixed one of his by rebuilding the cylinder & it only lasted for a year. I find that hard to believe. Have you ever talked... -

I have the cylinder you refered to, I assume this is0 where the steering wheel play0 is comming from, it looks like you have to remove the sheetmetal & gas tank to get to it. I"ll post how it goes. -

I have a '70 Ford 5000, basically the tractor is in good shape, but there is about 1/3 of steering wheel play. I was told that this was common on the 5000 & I probably need to re-build the steering box... Any suggestions where to start without taking the whole tractor apart? Or what to do 1st... -

Great point, I need the manual so I can see what I'm trying to look at, I'd like the idea of a CD, it could be a pain, but the up side would be that you wouldn't feel so bad when you get grease on it, throw the pages in the stove & print out another.... -

A stupid question.... the service manual on this site is $99.99 and I assume it is the factory issued manual, I found one on "The MOTOR Book Store.com" site for $34.00, http://www.themotorbookstore.com/fordtractor.html it says it's a re-print & is 1-1/2" thick with thousands of pics. I wonder... -

Thanks for the heads up, from all of the feedback I have received from this post it appears that this is a common occurance & splitting the transmission just sounds like a major undertaking. I may have to learn to live with it. Thanks, -

This 5000 tractor has the Independent 540, but is doing exactly as yours, I plan to look into all thats involved with "fixing" this. The tractor is really in exceptional shape & is going to be my "project" for a while. I really don't like the thought of the PTO running all of the time. Thanks... -
