    4020 pto

You have to remove a snap ring, pull out the 540 stub shaft, then put in the 1000 stub shaft. The extra shaft is stored sideways in the rear casting. You will lose about a pint of oil in the process, but it may help to put the front wheels in a ditch before pulling the shaft out.

    JD4020 Revival

My son in Libertyville Iowa (south east Iowa) has a 158 loader for sale. Not sure the asking price but he wants it off his 4020 and will make you a good deal.

Anyone have any secrets to starting water melon seedling

Yes the triploid watermelon seed is tricky to germinate and get a strong plant. I have received some good tips from the seed supplier and have had much better results. Here is what they say. Have potting soil premoistened and let it warm up to greenhouse temp. Just wet enough so it will...

    What size disk

I think my 14 ft Burch disk is a perfect match with my 4020. Fluid in tires but no duals. I can pull a cultipacker behind easily now but if I tried to go to a 16 ft with a roller it would be too much on plowed ground, loose sand, and wet spots. With duals you would probably want a 16 ft disk.

    Ford 8n or MF 65

A question everyone can agree on the correct answer! I agree the Massey is the better choice. I used to do a lot of work with my uncles MF 135 and would like to pick one up some day.

    friend's gas 4020 died and won't restart

So I took a look. They put on a new rotor and cap. I get a strong spark out of the coil wire when I open the points with a screwdriver. It has good gas flow to carb. They tried to get it to fire on starting fluid but nothing. Spark plugs not fouled. It was running just fine then he had it...

    Tractor supply more

Yes the Rural King stores are not what they once were, though I still get a lot there. My new favorite hardware/farm store is Fairview Farm Supply in Pembroke, KY. I only get there when making the trip for greenhouse and horticulture supplies at the nearby Deerfield Supply. Both are Amish...

    Heavy Disc Plow

I had been looking for a heavy offset disk to till up weedy melon fields in late summer, and also to turn under rye cover crops in spring without leaving dead furrows. Finally found an 8 ft Bush Hog model in Iowa, priced only $2500, with good blades and decent paint. Being in Southern...

    Lewis Poultry Housekeeper

It picks up the big clumps but allows the finer pieces of bedding to be reused.

    Apology to jddrawbar

I wonder where people are getting the idea that food is less nutritious nowadays? I would say the average American is over nourished, judging from the crowd at Walmart.

    Golden Jubilee resistor question

If the points are open it will still show 12 volts even with the resistor, since the voltage drop only occurs when current is flowing. Check the resistance of the coil to see what exactly is on it.

    Bushel of corn

When people ask to buy a bushel of sweetcorn from me I just sell them a bag with 5 dozen in it. I think I read somewhere that five dozen is considered a bushel. We sell many bags like that for freezing corn for $20/bag. This year the biggest day we had orders for 22 bags, in addition to what...

    Fertilizer percentages don't add up.

By convention, the potassium is expressed as equivalent weight of K2O, and phosphorus as equivalent of p2o5. neither of these substances is present in the fertilizer, because the potash is KCl and the phosphorus is some form of phosphate, either diammonium phosphate or a phosphoric acid...

    Waterwheel Transplanter

I needed a hydrostatic drive to go slow enough to plant strawberries and other crops that are in double rows at one foot or less spacing. I got a MX5400 for 60 payments of $500 brand new. works great, but it a little light on the front end with a tank full of water in the setter and two big...

    Decisions decisions...

Be sure you try them out so you can see which ones are easier to get on and off, easier to see the drawbar from the seat, easier to reach the controls, and how you like the hydrostat pedal. These things are not equally well designed, and even downright unhandy in some models.
