    GL-1 SAE 90 is a Gear oil with an equivalent thickness of SAE 50 in engine oil. I have a British made Fergie too. It is what is called for in the manual. And I use my tractor at -20C and colder.     I have questions about MF35.

    Put some oil in #1 sparkplug hole and redo compression. If it is the rings, the compression will go up. If it is a valve issue, there will be no change.

    Massey Ferguson 35x Wiring with Alternator conversion

    I would not recommend a Voltmeter INSTEAD of an Ammeter. An zero centre ammeter gives you an instant indication of net charge or discharge. I have had voltmeters in my vehicle show 14 volts but there was a net discharge due to a blown diode.
