    If you've got 4.6V to the coil, your switch is supplying power. That may be a little low, but it's there. Turn the switch off and it should go away. When you turn the engine over by hand to the point it opens the points, that terminal should read battery voltage instead of 4.6V. If it does...

    As Used Red said, disconnect that small wire. If it still cranks, "sometimes" you can tap the solenoid with a screwdriver handle and jar those contacts loose. If you do have to replace the solenoid, don't go by looks. The solenoid on an 8N is activated by applying ground to that little terminal...

    None of the ones I found seemed to fit exactly either, but those look like the ones I ended up using. I think as long as they keep dust out, they'll work. Mine have been in place for 8 years now.

    Thanks Jerry. I'm still kicking, just not as high as I used to! Had a set back with some health issues but I'm back in the shop now. Not planning to open up the carb shop again, but I have a few projects to get to including a 1939 9N and that 2600D I bought a few years ago.

    I think you have the numbers right. The one you called rusty would be a 1945 2N by the serial number. And as someone else said, that extra shifter is for a Sherman auxiliary transmission. Most likely a step-up trans. It would give you 8 forward and 2 reverse speeds but also changes the PTO...

    He didn't post the greatest pictures but that grill and nose cone without the chin looks more like an 800 series than an 801 series. It does have power steering but that being blue maybe was added? Either way, if you want to pick it up and drop it off at my house it would be good to see...

    Thanks John! She's got some scratches on the floorboards since that picture was taken because she's still earning her keep hauling the landscape rake and leveling the driveway. Will definitely need a bath before going to a show! lol
