Dunham Lehr 22 loader cylinder disassembly

Richmond, Indiana I believe a now deceased peach grower and lover of things David Brown told me. At one time there must have been a dealer as quite a few farmers south of me still use/did use David Browns, most had a derelict loader or two laying in weeds along a fence once the tractor got old...

Dunham Lehr 22 loader cylinder disassembly

Less than an inch as I recall RR. It is obstructed by the piston as it is being withdrawn from the cylinder. The piston seals/packing snag on it. Back when I was a 20's sprout in construction in the Rio Grande Valley (Brownsville, Harlingen and Padre Island) we had weekly cylinder leaks due...

Dunham Lehr 22 loader cylinder disassembly

Daniel, I am familiar with the style needing the wire removed through a hole. On my cylinders once the end cap is unscrewed the rod support can be pushed in far enough to remove the wire/snap ring.

Dunham Lehr 22 loader cylinder disassembly

rr, getting the wire out isn't the problem, it's getting the seals past the internal groove once the wire ring in removed.

Dunham Lehr 22 loader cylinder disassembly

Had not encountered a hydraulic cylinder with an internally grooved tube before attempting to re-seal the rollback cylinder on a DL 22 mounted to a DB 885. Could not remover the rod and piston last winter due to the internal groove I wasn't aware of. I ended up $360 in the hole for a simple...

Hydraulic power steering - centering the steering wheel?

Fritz, no external leaks but given the tractors age and no sign of the steering cylinder ever having been resealed, I'd say you are spot on. In a tight spot or rapid, slow speed changes in direction, the steering wheel can sometimes turn a bit without the front wheels turning - I had thought it...

Hydraulic power steering - centering the steering wheel?

Orbital valve, that's the word I was looking for! Complicated enough to make Rube Goldberg proud. A friend who saw it apart on the bench asked, "who sat down and figured out where the holes needed to be drilled?". Back to your question, it's an 885. Have a 990 yard ornament with the same...

Hydraulic power steering - centering the steering wheel?

Just re-sealed the hydraulic steering gizmo at the base of the steering column on my David Brown. While following instructions for bleeding air from the system I found the number of turns to lock varied between left and right turns by more than one revolution. Nothing I tried seemed to make...

    SAE 10W or 20W oil

Unobtanium? Going in the power steering on an 885 David Brown where "a good 10W oil" is called for. Can't find straight 10 or 20W. This will be a total change-out of the fluid after a repair. Would it be okay to use ISO46 (20W)? I have a fiver on hand. I see claims it work fine in power...

David Brown 885 Steering Wheel Upper Bearing Leaking Grease??

The lack of reply suggests this isn't of much interest but, after looking for parts I found others have had the same issue. So, maybe someone might benefit . . . the source of the oil leak is/was the hydraulic steering unit at the bottom of the steering column. A failed internal hydraulic seal...

885 David Brown with a Danfoss Steering Valve - Reseal Parts

I have not but if my local hydraulic shop draws a blank I will give them a look.

885 David Brown with a Danfoss Steering Valve - Reseal Parts

At the least, the topmost steering seal on the hydraulic steering valve is shot. The valve has filled the steering column with oil making a mess. Danfoss wants right at $100 for a small number (about $5 worth) of o-rings and a seal. Looked on line for alternatives but Danfoss seems to have a...

    Hydraulic Cylinder Question

In case anyone might be interested - After having used the loader enough to form an opinion after altering the dump cylinder restriction, it is my observation that increasing the area of the restriction by 50% (area, NOT the diameter) has noticeably increased the dump/rollback cycle. A seat of...

    DB990 Clutch Access Question

Thanks RG. This is a twelve. The tractor the fellow who suggested I look into not splitting has a twelve also, but, his has the high/lo shifter with the big dog-leg in it were the one keeping the grass from growing out front of the house has shifters looking identical to my 885. Something...

    DB990 Clutch Access Question

Bump for another question if you check in RG. Clutch pedal has been strapped down for a week now, tried pumping the tractor with mine - no go. Talked to another 990 owner I know who it turns out, had to deal with a stuck clutch in his tractor. He said there is an access hole in the bottom of...
