    Ford 5000 diesel compression test

Just to update, I rebuilt and reinstalled the injectors and the tractor starts easily now.

    Ford 5000 diesel compression test

I got my new pop tester set up and was able to test the old injectors. Not surprisingly, they all just squirted like squirt guns at relatively low pressure (no definite pop pressure, but they would start releasing around 2000 psi) and with no visible atomization. I have my new nozzles, but...

    Ford 5000 diesel compression test

Thanks, I appreciate that. Minimum is fine for now, since I know I have other work to do anyway. The PTO was running full time when I got it, and I was able to fix that by adjusting the PTO brake, but now the PTO doesn't turn at all. The shaft had been broken and welded at some point in the...

    Ford 5000 diesel compression test

This one has a CAV pump, so no oil in the pump as far as I know. I do always hold the glow plug button in for 30 seconds or so before trying to start it. I might go ahead and buy one of the chinese pop testers, since they seem to work ok for light duty use. On another note, last night when I...

    Ford 5000 diesel compression test

Ah, yeah I forgot about that. I'll double-check that my seal around the compression test adapter is good then.

    Ford 5000 diesel compression test

Thanks for the insights. Battery is less than a year old and was in fact on a charger for several hours before and during the testing, and I have a new starter installed a few months ago. Cranking speed was good and consistent, and I cranked for several seconds on each test until the gauge...

    Ford 5000 diesel compression test

I have a 1973 5000 diesel which is hard to start, and I've finally had a little time to do a compression test. Here are the numbers I've found: 260 dry, 360 wet 260 dry, 360 wet 225 dry, 400 wet 195 dry, 300 wet I know these aren't great, but I'm just looking for opinions. I've not adjusted...

    Ford 5000 starting

Is there anything else I can check to verify? I guess a good diesel shop could test the pump if I brought it in? I've seen rebuild services online too where I could ship the pump, but I'm not sure if that's a great idea versus a local shop.

    Ford 5000 starting

Ok, that's interesting. I'll still try to check compression and injector condition, but assuming those are decent, I might be looking at a pump rebuild. I do have a CAV pump on the tractor. Here are a couple of pictures if that helps.

    Ford 5000 starting

I can usually see white smoke after a few seconds of cranking. It wants to start, but it almost never quite gets there if the engine is hot.

    Ford 5000 starting

I have a 73 Ford 5000 which I've had for almost two years. It hadn't been started in 10 years or so when I got it, but after getting a few things worked out, I was able to use it last summer. I'm having what I think is kind of a weird problem starting it. If it's cold, it will normally start...

    5000 PTO education

Thanks, I'll consider that. One weird thing about this tractor is that apparently the PTO shaft was once broken and welded back together. As a result, I have a little wobble on the shaft, but so far at least it doesn't seem to be causing any trouble. I'll likely replace it at some point...

    5000 PTO education

I believe February 1973 was the actual production date, so you may be right. I have the slotted set screw with a lock nut just ahead of the engagement lever. Was there some benefit to the band?

    5000 PTO education

My new-to-me 1973 5000 has come along pretty well so far, so I spent 45 minutes or so this afternoon brush hogging to just test everything out. When I got the tractor, the PTO had the usual problem of running all of the time. I was able to adjust the brake band using the set screw near the...

    5000 leveling box handle

I was surprised actually that after I took it all apart, both of the gears are in nearly perfect condition. I have it all cleaned up now and ready to go back together, and I got a replacement (original) handle in the mail today. I'll get it back on the tractor tomorrow maybe.
